Hi,

I'm new here and I've already posted this to the Pantaheads site where it was suggested that I join this list in order to widen the net. The situation is as follows.

A good friend has bought a wrecked 1990 750 Paso
California.

It was missing the ignition pick-ups which sit on a
half-moon of metal around the flywheel which he has
recently managed to buy from ebay.

Unfortunately, he has now discovered that the ignition
system is 'different' to the standard 750 Paso with
all, or most of the feeds being passed through a
Magneti Marelli Digiplex electronic ignition unit,
part No. 2S Med 441A. He is working from a standard
750 Paso manual which shows a completely different
wiring diagram as well as a different electronic
ignition unit.

The second problem is that the ebay vendor who sold
him the pick-ups cut the cable to get it through the
crank case and although the severed connections have
been supplied with the pick-ups, the manual he's
working from does not cover this set-up so he has no
clue as to where the ignition pick-up cables should be
attached. This is unlike the standard Paso which feeds
the timing pulse up to the electronic firing boxes
located under the seat of the standard Paso.

Third problem is that there are no timing marks on the
flywheel to set the pick-up position to. It appears to
be quite unlike the standard 750 but may be the same
wiring arrangement and Digiplex ignition system as the
906 Paso.

Can anyone help out with this dilemma???

Thanks

Roderick

Your last guess was the closest. It's most like the digiplex. There was a post about setting the timing with pictures a few weeks back. You will have to dredge the postings for it. No more than a month back.

Good day Roderick

I also have a 750 Paso with the Marelli Digiplex 2S ignition system, did you get the information you needed, or is there anything I can help you with - connections etc..?

One word of warning, I am having a lot of problems with mine at the moment with the bike cutting out, I know of a 906 with almost identical problems. According to some Digiplex gurus this can be a problem with these boxes - the big problem is that they are obsolete, though there are different schools of thought on interchangeability.

If you still need more info, let me know and I'll tell you what I can.

Best regards

Mark

there is an aftermaret replacement. The site is german and unluckily I cannot find an english translation, but I guess you can mail them anyway if there are questions.

maybe the 906 wiring scheme will help

Good day Gerhard

Many thanks for the information, my German is rusty but good enough to understand most of the web page.

When I get chance to look at the 750, this may well be exactly what I need. In the meantime I have also bought a 907, I just have to convince the other half that it is worth keeping both machines.

Vielen dank.

Best regards

Mark

Roderick, if you are reading this the original pick up is a standard Marelli which is still available (at least as a Lucas equivalent which is exactly the same impedance and connection) - I ordered one from my local auto electrical specialist and it came in a couple of days, so the parts are all available to rebuild your system.

I can tell you the wire connections for the Digiplex box if needed.

The pickup sits at about the one o'clock position on the crankcase, and the flywheel has one lobe which is a "double" which I presume is what gives the box it's reference point. There are no means of adjusting the timing, though mine is spot on when it does agree to run.

All the best with what sounds like a very challenging project.
