I'm looking to replace both the sprockets on my "88 750 Paso". I'm looking for the best combination available, so please tell me what you think or what combination you prefer. I currently have the 15/39 set up, I feel I could make a few changes for the better. What would be the best chain available? |

The question you need to ask yourself is how you plan on riding the bike. If you are only going to commute and want better gas mileage, stay stock with the gearing or go down a tooth or three on the rear sprocket. If you ride the mountain twisties and want more drive, especially when climbing to higher elevations, I've heard a 15/40 combination is pretty good. Increasing the number of teeth on the rear sprocket will help with acceleration. Personally, I was going to with a 15/40 on my Paso but stayed with the 15/38. I have a brand new, Ducati 40-tooth rear sprocket I'll probably never use. |

I could be interested in the 40 tooth sprocket. What will you take for it? |

I used the 15/40 combination for a while and then switched back to the original. What i noticed was that for some speeds (like 50 km/h/30mph in town, or 70km/h/44mph on normal roads which are common speed limits here) it seemed that the lower gear would revv too high, the higher gear too low. I was constantly shifting up and down when driving at these speeds. That`s not the case with the original sprocket combination. Could be that going one tooth up would have cured this also. Otherwise 15/40 is nice to ride specially on mountain roads. G. |

With my experience i think, that original 750 Paso gearing is very close to optimal, but near all later(like 907IE) are geared too high and need bigger to rear, or smaler to front.... ![]() |

I know this is the 750 forum but in response to Finnpaso's comment on the 907 being geared too high... depends on the roads and cruise speed. I re-ratioed my 907 down from 15/40 to 15/44 (10%) two problems: 1: wheel-standarama...front wheel up all the time, needed a lot of care in traffic [907 can have a bit of a flat spot when hot] 2: highway cruise at (say) 115km was nearly 5000 RPM and very loud if you're doing 200kms++ riding - might as well use 5th gear (same ratio) I went back to the 15/40 standard after a few months. I would re-consider the 15/44 if I did more work with a pillion - or if lower speed limits or city riding was more common. |

As everybody knows, "right" gearing depends driving style, roads, wanted RPM:s, speed limits, etc things. We have here in Finland maximun speed limit 120 km/h (only in motorways), maximun speed is 100 km/h in big highways and 80 km/h in normal twisty roads, so we really DONT need high top speed at all. We have plenty of twisty roads with good surface, what are just for Ducatis. If i want to enjoy my life in Ducati saddle, then i go to those twisty roads for fast driving and i surely want to keep my RPM in right area(about 5500-8500), where 907IE engine runs very well. For all that i use 15 in front and 46(!!!) in rear. Then my top speed is under 200 km/h, but for me about 120-150km/h in those twisty roads(ok, lucliky no polices there so often) here is very good speed and then i can "control" my Ducati engine, suspension, characters, etc. best way. I dont like straight highways at all, so that 15 / 46 gearing is optimal for my driving in twisty roads in my 907IE. ![]() As I told, gearing depends many things, so everybody shall be happy with "own gearing" and i dont want to make any war about this thing. 15 / 46 fits PERFECT to me and i stay in that.. ![]() ![]() btw, my 907 dont have any "flat spot" problems, no matter what is engine temperature.... ![]() and for "loud bike" i use ALLWAYS ear plugs, when driving my bikes..... ![]() |

I will be commuting on back straight roads, that's why I will be going with the 15/37. For the mountain twisties, I will be using 15/40. I will let you know how it turns out. |

Well, It's all back together and on the road again! I've already put in 80 miles on the 15/37 sprocket combo and it's working out great for me. I'm able to run what seems like IDLE in the city and on the open road I'm running at about 82 miles an hour with 5000rpm. I'm sure the miles to the gallon will also improve. I will be putting it to the test this weekend when I take it to the mountains. |
