I have seen a few posts discussing adding relays to the stock headlight to get better illumination, but I cannot find a detailed step-by-step write up, nor a diagram.
Does anyone have it?

The basic idea is too keep the higher wattage demands away from your switches. The high wattage demand of the headlights is taped directly to a fused circuit from the battery or starter supply.There are many such mod articles on the net as it is a very good idea on any headlight circuit,especially when adding bulbs with higher wattage requirements( like dual H4's). Your normal switches only are used to switch the relays on and off. Relays dont have very high wattage demands so your switches will last much longer and you will keep voltage drops to a minimum. The down side to this sort of mod is you will have a very high demand wire which needs to be protected running from the battery all the way to the relays and headlights. This wire needs the proper size fuse at its source to minimize the risk of fire and it must be routed safely with a minimum of bends and lots of protection from chafing as well as a good air supply. The relays as well need a good location away from fuel lines and well ventilated.

be sure the inner side of the lens is clean, too. I bought 3 new headlights in the past years for 3 different bikes and all were dull and fogged from the inside. Cleaning already makes quite a difference.
