Post subject:  Hydraulic Rebuild?

Does anyone have info on 750 Paso hydraulic rebuild kits? Front brake master cyl is my immediate need, but I'd like to rebuild all hydraulic components while I'm at it.

Secondly, does anyone know of a compatible hydraulic fluid that does not remove paint? Such a bummer to have Dot 4 quietly leaking on my beautiful fuel tank. Caught it in time, but the surface was very slightly affected. Not good.

Brake fluid eats paint. That's all there is to it!

There are probably Brembo rebuild kist out there. Check e-bay to see whats available.

A quick search brought up this information:

SILICONE BASED FLUID
Fluids containing Silicone are generally used in military type vehicles and because Silicone based fluids will not damage painted surfaces they are also somewhat common in show cars.

Silicone-based fluids are regarded as DOT 5 fluids. They are highly compressible and can give the driver a feeling of a spongy pedal. The higher the brake system temperature the more the compressibility of the fluid and this increases the feeling of a spongy pedal.

Silicone based fluids are non-hydroscopic meaning that they will not absorb or mix with water. When water is present in the brake system it will create a water/fluid/water/fluid situation. Because water boils at approximately 212ยบ F, the ability of the brake system to operate correctly decreases, and the steam created from boiling water adds air to the system. It is important to remember that water may be present in any brake system. Therefore silicone brake fluid lacks the ability to deal with moisture and will dramatically decrease a brake systems performance.

From the website: http://www.afcoracing.com/tech_pages/fluid.shtml

One thing you might consider is switching to a newer master cyl. I run the master cyl's from a 1998 Ducati 748 on my Paso. But my favorites are the 1999 and newer ones, with the silver levers. For the price, that is. (I'd like a Brembo radial, but I've only got one and it's on my YSR) You can pick the 1999 and newer ones on eBay for less than the cost of a rebuild kit.

Excellent tip for Bevel Heaven! I checked their website and viola! They should have what I need. Kind of embarrassing to admit they're a few hours drive from me.

Silicone brake fluid sounds very very tempting, but Roger Slater's immortal words to me about 20 years ago were to keep Dot 5 out of the Pasos or you'll get "Dot-5-itis" (made it sound like a brake disease). I'd even deal with some sponginess, given that my Paso doesn't get ridden too hard these days, if it meant eliminating the risk of paint damage.

Next question: Are the front brake internal pistons 15 or 16mm? I called Bevel Heaven to see if they knew and the gent who helped me (Steve, I believe) said to look near the banjo bolt. They have either size. Only problem is my master cyls (and the rest of the top triple clamp area) are powder coated a beautiful satin black, but unfortunately that small detail has been obscured.

Thanks guys! Beautiful riding WX here in SoCal today!

Dave
have a look a post (couple posts earlier than yours) re brakes bleeding etc. I just bought a kit for my sport which was 15mm and I've been told paso is the same if standard.
