Hello, as you can see below my rear shock needs some work. The spring can be ordered new for approx 90 euros. The absorber itself was replaced just a couple of years ago (prev owner) and looks perfect. The outer hose of the oil-line is gone. So it's the spring and the line that needs replacing. The line looks alot like braking lines. Still have a couple of new stainless steel ones lying around. Before I take it apart.. Some tips? tx ;)

My two pence worth after buying a used Ohlins rear shock absorber - take it to an Ohlins distributor, ideally the main importer for the country where you are based, and ask them to take care of refurbishing it. From experience it will not be inexpensive - been there, done that and have the t-shirt...
Cheers, Mark

Tx for the reply. Since the absorber itself doesn't need replacing I'll give it a go. This topic is also usefull:

I'll post any progress.
Léon

I'm living in the NL. Tx for the effort. This needs to be done:
1. replace old spring with new one
2. new ball-joints
3. new oil line
4. offcourse new oil/fill with gas etc.

You happen to know if the mounting points of the oil-line has the same dimensions as brakelines (f.e. Hel)?
cheers Léon

Hi Brutus,

I bought a second hand 750 ohlins shock and converted it for use on my 906. I can agree with getting a rebuild done by an ohlins dealer. Not cheap but the difference is noticeable.

I was in the Netherlands at the time and used http://www.ohlins-rooske.nl/

They did a very good job.

Some more info also in this post viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4784&hilit=+Ohlins

Hi Brutus,

most of the line connections are M10 x 1 mm and interchangeble with brake lines.
your spring looks like a Ø48/200mm lenght/80 kg/mm spring.
probably too soft. if your weight is >60 incl. gear it's oke I think.
for overhaul of your rear shock you can contact:
Rooske as already stated.
Wilbers in Nordhorn Germany (500 mtr across the border)
SO Products in Bornebroek (Stamsnijder= previous racer)
Reiger in Hengelo
Proflex in Stolwijk
Hyperpro in Werkendam
TEchnoflex in Brabant
Wim Kroon near Veghel (Öhlins specialist)

As you see, a lot of suspension specialists in Holland

3 of the 4 jobs can be done at home. for repressurerizing you need nitrogen gas.

Tx for the replies. I'll make a few calls to find out what the costs will be. Today I managed to take the shock apart. Constructed a tool to compress the spring. Works like a charm..!

It appears that the external adjuster has no gas in it.. Is this possible/correct? Took the line off and noticed that one side is 8mm. Anyone knows how to take the gold-colored adjuster on the spring itself apart? See the first picture of this topic plz. Also the spring measures 220mm and before it worked ok (driver approx 100kg & 2m ;) )

Tx. This is great stuff. If I'm correct this type of öhlins (DU5080) uses an adjuster with only oil inside. Makes my job a lot easier.

Hi Brutus,

the adjuster changes the preload of the spring and contains no gas, as in this application the compressebility of gas is unwanted.
is there a specific reason you want to take the height adjuster apart?
if there is no reason and it is functional, why bother?
you must be aware that original spares from these type Marzochhi shocks become rare. For Öhlins I can not speak, but fear that units 20 years old not serviceable.
Wel, you can ditch the height adjuster if can't get it right after disassembly.
I switched to Proflex as their availability of spares is very good even for very old ones and their quality is very good. comparable to Öhlins.

Bertus

BTW; your tool is a fine piece of tooling!

Hi Brutus ,Ducbertus is right the pre-load ram is only oil filled and needs no servicing unless leaking. If you take it off the shock and wind the adjuster,it will pop apart.Kind of like popping a brake piston out with compressed air,but then oil goes everywhere, and there's nothing else to service aside from the seals ,so what's the point ? (don't ask me how I know   )

Did you find the hidden snap ring ? They are great fun to remove without damaging the shaft.Luckily that area of shaft doesnt have any seal contact except on reassembly,so make sure you completely debur and smooth the groove before sliding the new seal assy. back on

Don't worry if you can't make the bottom adjuster work,it needs to be pressurised before it starts to click again. J.

Tx, I'll keep this is mind. The adjuster needed removal cause I'd like to change the oil-line and there was a bit of leakage at the pre load ram. So that'll need new sealing.

Hi Brutus,

Just a short note to let you know that my Ohlins mechanic charges 2 to 3 hours in time for overhauling a rear shock absorber. It's the parts that tend to be expensive but, on a positive note, virtually all are available from Ohlins...

Cheers,

Mark

It appears all parts are available and in stock  Try to pick it up tomorrow..
This weekend I've dropped off the spring for a new (powder) coat of paint. It'll cost me 15 euro's (incl sandblasting) :D :D
cheers Léon
