Post subject:  Starter motor question.

Recently I acquired a Pantah 500SL in bits. In order to clean it up better I decided to take the starter off and check out the starter while it was off the bike.
Now a few weeks back I had the starter off my 907ie to replace the brushes and the screw behind the starter intermediate gear could be accessed through one of the holes in the pinion. I was a bit surprised to find that on the Pantah, although there 2 holes in the pinion none of them lined with the screw. In fact the screw, as you can see from the picture is directly behind the gear teeth so there is no chance of making a hole for it. Which leads me to believe that there must have been a major redesign of the crankcases for the later models, possibly rotating the screw holes anti-clockwise a little. So I'm wondering when this change was made and if the 750 Paso engine has a hole to access the starter motor screw or is it like the Pantah.

Derek the case and the starter motor are the same on the Paso 750 motor, except they've made an extra hole in the case, and tapped an extra thread in the starter motor (4 holes and threads, 3 screws) just maybe 10mm to 12mm above your pesky screw.

There's 4 holes in the 750 pinion, 2 of which, 180 degrees away from each other, line up with the extra hole/thread.

I'll post up a pic later or tomorrow when I can get some light shining on it - the motor's in my dining room at the moment, and that's not on the sunny side of the house.

What's that thing that those cables are secured to? I don't get that bit. My flywheel is there. I'm guessing it's alternator related, but my alternator is in a bag in the hall cupboard, so I'm not quite sure how that all goes together yet.

Thanks Mark. Now that you mention it the starter motor on my 907 has the extra threaded hole and the gear has 2 holes on a wider pitch which line up with the re-positioned screw in the casing. They obviously realised they'd cocked up with the original version and did a quick and easy re-design for the later bikes.

The cables are to the pickups for the Bosch ignition.

Ah thanks for the info on the cables Derek, I was a bit confused there.

I'm having issues posting the pics, but at least we've got it all covered now so I don't need to.

I have an 87 Paso built in February 1987 which did not have an access hole to remove the starter. Luckily I acquired the tool to remove the flywheel which allowed the secondary gear to come off revealing the starter motor bolt.

The flywheel may be removed with an air wrench, putting it back on it helps to have the special tool.

Hope you replaced the starter gear with the newer type ;)
