Well, to my utter surprise my new to me '88 Paso runs. Had to repair some rodent damage to the wiring. Installed new timing belts, confirmed valve clearance. Removed the Mikuni TM38 flat slides that came with it, removed float bowls expecting the usual grunge from years of sitting, but they were pristine. Previous owner must have drained them when he put it into long-term storage. Put them back on without further work. Cleaned the oil filter cartridge/screen, oil filter, fresh oil. Spun it over until I had oil pressure. Hooked up an auxiliary fuel supply, choke on, spun it over, it coughed and ran. Amazing. Fluttered a bit, but settled into an idle faster than I would have expected. More than a little satisfying.

Has anyone out there installed similar TM38 flat slides? Wondering what jetting you're running. I was so excited to find the carbs clean I forgot to remove jets and record what's in mine. I ask because at least at present it gives a bit of a cough upon throttle and seems disinclined to want to ramp up quickly. Idle is solid, fuel/air at 2.5 turns out on each carb. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I think someone not so long ago put some of these carbs on a 750 sport engine. He may have put the setting s as well. I did start to search for it on here then decided that would be a nice job for you to do :lol:

So a more thorough search of the archives yields lots of information for the CV-type Mikunis as used in later Ducs and on Yamahas, but absolutely nothing about the TM series flat slides. I'm surprised there's isn't some information out there? The carbs on my bike - TM38 - were purchased by a previous owners as a kit, complete with cables, manifolds, etc... Theoretically, they were pre-jetted. Mains are 200, pilots 22. They have leaner needle jets and needles than what you'd get out of the box, and the needle clips were one notch up from center, so lean. The whole thing is set up to run lean. One issue I'm fighting is the forward cylinder running rich while the rear is lean. I've resynched the carbs - forward carb was set lower than the rear, which probably explains the spitting on accel - and am setting up a fuel supply that runs off the fuel pump to assure adequate fuel supply during setup.
