I went out for a short ride today and when returning the clutch started slipping big time!
The bike is drivable but only at slow speed and low throttle as soon as you open her up it slips no matter what gear it's in.

The bike is a 1993 750SS with a wet clutch and it did not give any warning or previous symtoms, it just started slipping in all gears.
I did change the oil about a week ago and this is the second time I ride after, I used Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic.

So, my questions;

1- Am am pretty good with wrenches but I've never done a motorcycle clutch.
Anything special to look out for, any tips, advice?
2- What do I need to buy, gaskets, discs, plates, springs anything else?
3- If anyone has changed a wet clutch can you please give me the run down on
the procedure?

Thanks!!

Have you adjusted your clutch lever in the last week or so? If your clutch system pumps up, it will be holding the clutch a bit open, and will slip. I had put on aftermarket levers on my ST2, and ended up with this problem. I backed out adjusting screw a bit and everything worked out wonderfully. If the piston in your Master cylinder doesn't retract enough, the pressure builds in the hose.

As with all clutch problems, start with bleeding your line.

Cheers,

Mobil 1 car or moto oil??

It makes a diff with the wet clutch. Modern oil have many very slippery friction modifiers. You may just need to drain the oil...

TIme to get out that drain pan! For this change I would use a standard motorcycle oil designed for the WET clutch.

The clutch discs absorb the oil so it may take some time to fully work the spillery stuff out. How many miles on the clutch? I have a buddy with a monster that now had 85K miles on the stock clutch pack. Wet clutches live a LONG time.

Only 6157 miles on the bike/clutch, I have to admit it was working good until the oil change. :,(
Where I live temps won't go down below 70 degrees F at this time so I'll probably use a 50W oil.
I will bleed the system again to be sure and check the lever adjustment.

1. Any suggestions on which oil to use?
2. Should I do a quick filter/oil change with regular, low cost oil and then a second new filter/oil change with "good" oil?

Thanks!! :)

UPDATE!! HAPPY UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!

I changed the oil and backed up the adjusting screw on the Pazzo lever (thanks Duc) and voila!! I have clutch again!!

I had three qts. of straight 30 in the garage so I thought what the hell looks good for a flush to me, I poured in the oil, started the bike waited for it to warm up and started working the clutch, it grabbed good so I took her for a spin and at first maybe a bit of slip in 2nd gear WOT and a bit of chatter but as I rode a bit more it got better and better!!! simply amazing what the "wrong" oil can do, wouldn't have believed it if I had not experienced it myself.

So tomorrow she's getting a new OEM filter and some good, fresh motorcycle semi-synthetic 10W40 oil.

My deepest appreciation for all those who took the time and trouble to respond and help me out ....you guys rock!!

Thanks again!!

I love happy endings.
I can see you now riding into the sunset with beautiful note from the exhaust, and a song in your heart.
Glad we can be clutch players for you.

Cheers,
