Well, we all need a winter project.
On Sunday Jetboy and I swapped bikes for little ride around Berkeley. In the end, we came to an agreement that I should take over the stewardship of his storied 750. I'll pick it up next weekend, but that hasn't stopped me from dreaming up the next project bike and what this thing will look like.

Here's the basic recipe;
Take one 1990 750 Nuovo Sport, and remove all body work, except the tank.
Stir inspiration from FlatRed custom and add spoonfuls of Ducati history (Sports mostly of course, new and old), a dollop of inspiration of classic Bobbers, Monsters, and Steam Punk. Are you getting the idea? Bare bones, and a lot bones showing through.

http://big-diesel.blogspot.com/2009/02/ ... opper.html

My proposed mod list:
900 motor with aluminum swingarm.
Round headlamp with small gauges.
M1R paso front forks with flat track bars or Tomaselli clipons, or somethin.
Custom single seat and mini cowl that looks a bit like the stock one, but no sides. Let that cool frame see the light of day.
Wire wheels from the current Sport Classics.
Hey the tank and frame will be stock. I'm calling it Nudo Nuovo

I'll keep you posted.
As I get through the changes, various parts will be up for sale to keep other Sports alive.
Of course, Jetboy will always have a bike to ride when he ventures down to the cheap seats in Fremont, as will any of you who happen to visit the Bay Area.

Cheers,

Ok, so the list changed a bit. Had time to think about it.

-Sport Classic wire spoke wheels
- M1R fork
- black Brembo 4-32 calipers
- 300 mm EBC steel rotors
- custom seat to look like 1966 250 Scrambler
- 7.5 wide rear fender- again, look at the 1966 250 Scrambler
- stock Sport taillight partially imbedded into the back of the seat.
- long tapered chrome megaphone exhaust pipes mounted high like the Imola racer, and custom header to attach them.

And some other surprises I haven't quite worked out yet.

Cheers, Phil

Sounds good.I especially like the sport classic wheels idea.I'd imagine they'll be hard to come by though?.

Anything comes at a reasonable price if you are diligent, and patient. I think I paid $300 for the pair of wire wheels from a Craigslist ad. The steel rims are often cheaper.

It took over 5 years to find a white 4.5 rear three spoke wheel for Rosso Blanco bike, and then it was all of 5 blocks from work, and a $125.

But first, I need a swingarm to hang the wheel on.

Cheers, Phil

How true. There must be an alternative to the swingarm problem.

UPDATE
Well, after i dug into the bike a bit more, I found lots wrong, and now I'm on the road to getting this moving forward.
The swingarm was knackered, and ugly. I found a swingarm from an F-1 to put on it. The 180 rear tire on the Sport Classic wheel fits, with minimal clearance. Now I just have to suss out the adaption of the 25mm bearings of the wheel, and the 17mm axle of the F-1 swing arm and chain adjusters. Oh, and chainline too. At least the swingarm fits the frame, motor, and shock, and brake caliper plate, so I'm headed in the right direction. Paid $400 for a freshly powdercoated swingarm with the adjuster bits.

After taking a few more things off the frame, I became concerned the frame was no longer straight, as the diagonal brace tube in the head area was bent, and there were obvious signs the the forks had contacted/impacted the frame rather hard. I stripped everything off the frame and dropped it off to Vern at G.T. Enterprises in No. California. Over the weekend he straightened it and I picked it up this afternoon. Vern has been doing this a long time and just a great guy to boot. Really fast service, and reasonable prices. If you need something straightened, Call Vern.

So, now I start to bolt a few things together for the initial fit up. Straight frame, new swing arm, 900ss shock with a HyperPro spring, and a Sport Classic rear wheel. That should keep me busy for a bit.

The exhaust system is near the top of the list after I get the rear wheel fitted. Remember Imola high pipes on the '72 Sport?

Cheers,

After much ado, I now have a swingarm hanging on my motor.
The stock swing arm was long since gone.
The swingarm on it was a steel one from a 90's 750 SS, modified to fit the 28mm pivot pin. But the swingarm was trashed by sprocket bolts that had backed out and destroyed the inside of the swing arm. The adjusters no longer slid in the tubes. After some discussion with a friend that welds, we opted for the simplest solution.

Cut off the forward arms off the modified swing arm.

Then weld them onto the donor swing arm (Steel SS swingarms are cheap)

and you have something that works once again.

Now, to fit in a wire spoke wheel into the swingarm from a Sport Classic. 17mm axle and 25mm bearings. Stay tuned. I have a plan.
Cheers, Phil

top job
looks like your friend did more than just weld, also added them angle plates on the sides, I'm sure that swingarm will stay put

Yeah, the forward arms were modified by the previous owner, and it was the shortest distance to getting a swingarm on it.
The F1 steel swing arm fit the bike, was too narrow for the Sport Classic rear wheel, by about 45mm. So I went with the steel swingarm for now. I'm still on the market for supermoto rear wheel to fit the uber cool F1 swing arm. But I have a swingarm and rear wheel now, so I'm not in a hurry to spend more money.
Cheers, Phil

nice job & welding, the complete front part looks quite different now. How did your friend secure that the complete alignment was perfect ? I can`t really imagine how that is done.

He cut the forward sections off with the pivot pin clamped in place. He aligned the axle and pivot pin to be in the same plane, then welded it up. I need to confirm if the hash marks for the chain adjuster are in the correct position. Of course, what ever offset there was before, I have again, and no telling what that was, or is now. While the swingarm is a simple fork, there are many dimensions that you need to consider. I'm not confident that this thing is perfectly square, but close enough for rock and roll. I will spend some time getting the chainline perfect, and will use a chain adjuster tool that centers in the axle and the pivot pin, and measures both sides.

Cheers, Phil

Here's a bike that is built with the same spirit and lines that my project bike will take on.
Oh, its a Guzzi.
http://www.bikeexif.com/moto-guzzi-bellagio
Wire wheels, nice brakes, full rear fender, some scrambler influence, old school paint on the tank, chrome exhaust. Love it.
Of course mine will have a bit more red paint.

Cheers, Phil
