Post subject:  Known incidents of Ducati 750 Sport frame cracking?

Hello all, newburt here.

Have been doing quite a bit of research on Ducati Paso and 750 Sport models, and am considering looking at a somewhat local 1990 750 Sport in the next week or so.

My Ducati 900ss/cr had the common frame cracking at the steering stem. Reared it's ugly head after 4 seasons of riding (thought I may be the only lucky one without cracking -lol). The proper fix would have been complete disassembly down to the frame, tubing/gusset reinforcements added, and repair of the oem welds and repaint. I sold the bike to a guy with experience in these matters, and I'm moving on.

I wrench on all my bikes, and removing a cracked 750 Sport swingarm for weld-repair would be do-able, but a cracked main frame would be a deal killer. Should I consider the 750 sport? With the help I've seen here, the fueling, tires, swingarm, etc. can be addessed. Many thanks,
bob p

While the frame cracking on the SS series is well documented. I have never seen nor heard of a Sport frame cracking. I have seen them bent, but not cracked.

Cheers, Phil

thanks very much for the prompty rely!

sold my m750ie (too much windblast at speed), sold my 749 (nice wind protection but ergos killed me), sold my 900ss/cr (great ergos, great wind protecton, and very stable up to 130 but frame cracked). am trying to find the perfect ducati with good ergos, power/braking, and wind protection at speed. crazy, i know.

Have you tried an ST yet? Love mine. Able to keep up with the racer boys on sunday, and comfortable enough to do 500 mile days. Oh, and they are pretty cheap these days.

2nd what Phil said about ST comfort, owned a 1999 ST4 and thought it was great on the long hauls. Presently own a 916 and a 750 Sport. The Sport makes the 916 feel big! Not so sure you want a Sport for it's comfort qualities.

+3 on the ST. You guys would probably prefer the ST2 for it's 2 valve simplicity but the ST4s was the best Ducati I've ever owned. Dead comfy yet could hold it with the sports bikes and never let me down in nearly 50,000 miles.

I don`t own a ST but for what I`ve heard from others (and in case you have all your service work done) a full service on a 4 valve Duc costs quite a bit more than on a 2 valve.

They only difference is adjusting the valves. Nichol's, a local independant shop, does my Sport for $150 and my ST4s for $220. I take off the body work before I bring them in. Since that covers 15000 miles, its not so bad. Spend a lot more in tires, chains, and oil in those 15k.

Cheers. Phil

That`s not too bad. I guess I still have the story from my powdercoater in the back of my head who told me he had his 996 at a Ducati dealership for a full service and the bill was over 1.000 Euros.
Shortly after that he sold the bike as for that reason. (official car dealerships charge over €90 per hour. I wonder if that Ducati dealer does that, too)

Yeah, the dealer seems to get a bit twisted at times. I took my 98 ST2 in for an alternator warranty, and asked them to change the oil while they had it. I even took off all of the fairings. They quoted me $140 for an oil change. Needless to say, I did it my self, and treated my girl to a nice dinner out with the change. I never went back to that dealer.

Sorry for going off topic here, but reading what you guys are saying about the servicing costs of the 4 Valve models is fascinating, when I was buying my last road bike, (second-hand of course for me) an S4R Monster was on the list, as was a S2R, Aprilla Tuono, MV Augusta 750 Brutale, 675 R Street Triple and of all things a CB600 Hornet, took everyone of them out for test rides (except the Hornet) and was suitably impressed then delved a bit deeper into long term cost of ownership, in particular servicing.
The MV was plain silly.

The Aprilla even sillier (and I bought and sold one within 6 weeks aside from service costs I was going to main myself on it.)

The Triumph just scraped through as ok bang for buck,

But the S4R min. $1000 each major service was quoted from more than one source, which put me off buying one at the end of the day, that is plain ludicrous.

This appears to be an Australia only? phenomena, as reading what you guys are saying particular in the US we seem to pay double for everything motorcycle and particularly Ducati related here.

Just my 2 cents worth.
