Been 2 plus years since I stripped and manual not too clear so can someone tell me what size shim goes on the left hand side of swingarm so lines up with chain (I don't have a laser).... For the record I also looked but can't find on web

Saw that .... doesn't make sense to have swingarm directly on to engine casing?
I read somewhere in a forum on a 800ss there is a 1.8mm shim either side and any other shims on the right side to get .10mm tolerance
As above I tore this apart years ago so can't remember and no photo and can only find one 1.8mm shim (maybe I lost one)
This seems more like it to me but my manual looks like the Stein diagram

I just reinstalled the swing arm on my 900. There is one washer/spacer on the inside of each side of the swing arm, resting between the swing arm and the engine cases.

you can look at later SS series manuals, and it has basically the same set up, but a different diameter pin. General rule is to set the chain side to the stock size, and shim the right side to fit. If you can, fill the gap with 2 washers instead of 1, as it will make a better bearing. Grease them before you assemble them. The grease also helps hold them in place during assembly. If you don't have enough spare shims, you can find them under the name of Arbor Shims, and can often get a set of them for $20-30. May be cheaper than ordering shims from Ducati. If you painted the cases, you should sand off the paint on the flange around the bearing boss, as it is a friction surface, and intended to take side loads. Stock shims are carbon steel, and will rust. You can get aftermarket shims of SS, but they are softer.
Cheers, Phil

i know this post is a bit late in coming but i have just reinstalled the swingarm to my 89 900 ss and the washes i removed before repainting engine and powdercoat frame and swingarm , probs should have filed powdercoat from inside surface of swingarm as she come apart with i x 1.8 or so washer to left side and 1 x 1.8 + 1 x .2 or .4 or so on right side, as it turned out only the 2 main washers fit back in, greased em and left em , i will see how that goes probs should have read these posts prior to install, i will post photos when i can , cheers ,Rob.
