As mentioned in another topic, I have fitted a D250 to my 906. The tyre had been removed for the rim to be repainted, but it is now remounted so I am able to post pictures and measurements. Please note: I am not saying this is the best option, but I chose to fit a 180/60 as I couldn't get the correct tyre. I chose the Dunlop as I intended to fit a Dunlop front and wanted the same manufacturer front and rear. Oh, and before I'm asked how it performs against the original Michelin, this is the Metzeler 160/70 that was fitted when I purchased the 906 - and it is the only Paso I have ridden. Ok, so here is the D250 fitted to the 906 rim The maximum width of the tyre is 183mm, and height is 615mm. Here it is with the Dunlop 130/70ZR 16 Sportmax Qualifier - both viewed from the rear. |

To fit this tyre, I had to move the chain over. I estimated this to be 10mm. My front sprocket was offset in by 5mm, so by removing it and turning it over I got the 10mm offset required. The retaining plate holes were tapped right through so there was no machining. The sprocket cover was refitted and there is plenty of clearance. This is the way it was fitted originally. I checked the chain was running true before I started - it was. So I turned it over and refitted it this way - 10mm offset. The rear sprocket had to be offset the same amount ofcourse. I bored the centre of the sprocket oversize by 4mm (diameter) and made a 10mm thick spacer with the original hole size (90mm) and a spigot that protrudes and locates in the sprocket. Above is the standard sprocket, and below with the centre bored out. Here is the spacer I made to locate on the hub and in the bored out sprocket. Do not just space out with washers or a plate as there will be no location for the sprocket and it will come loose. 10mm offset is the maximum you can achieve due to sprocket/swing arm clearance. I fitted 10mm longer cap bolts to fit the sprocket but the heads hit the swing arm. To overcome this I deepened the recesses in the sprocket by 3mm, machined 1mm off the back of the screw heads, and another 1mm off the tops. They are now flush with the face of the sprocket. I also moved the chain guide on the swing arm. All this machining I did myself as that is my trade. If you have to have this work done, any machine shop with a lathe and mill will be capable. Cost should not be high as the work is not difficult. Just make sure the work is done in a four-jaw chuck as a three-jaw may not be accurate. |

This way it seems to function with 906, but in 750 there is different front sprocket(look totally anotherkind), so this is not solution to 750 wheel size problem. This my comment was only because also 750 owners suffer from same tire problem! Nice job! ![]() It would be very nice to own good lathe! ![]() |

Thanks Finnpaso. I shall have to find a picture of the 750 front sprocket to see if there is some way of offsetting it. Cheers, CB |

additional 10mm front sprocket offset are not possible on a P750 as it would fall from the drive shaft. At least for the models using the front sprocket with retainer clip that is. For this possibilities are: pics removed as obviously P750 & 906 front sproket and drive shaft are different. They were moved here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3042&start=75 |

somehow I don`t really understand the differences between P750 and 906 though. The swingarm is the same, as is the rim and rear sprocket. Why is the front sprocket completely different? The P750 sprocket has the collar showing towards the engine. The total width is different and it`s slightly recessed where the retainer ring is. If the correct mounting position of the 906 front sprocket is with the collar outwards something must be quite different. Is it a wider engine case ?! |

It can be just that... as 906 have less that offset compared to 750 Paso. I dont own 906, so i cant make any masurements from it. ![]() |

Please post photos of the tyre as fitted, including some close up shots of the chain clearance. I can access this tyre in my local market at $389 each. I'm interested! Thanks. |

HI Mobius, I still have not refitted the wheels to the bike since I took it apart to be painted. The main hold-up has been repairs to the exhaust as I wanted to retain the originals. I will post photos of the clearances soon. $389 is a good price - I paid over $400. Cheers, CB |

As promised here are photos of the rear wheel fitted. Clearance between the tyre and chain is 8mm. Feel free to ask questions or request further photos. I will be posting more when the bike is fully assembled. Can anyone supply dimensions of the original Michelin and original chain clearance please? |

I have been following this thread with keen interest and colonial boy has to be congratulated on his endeavours to solve the major issue of tyres with a relatively straight forward 'fix' for the 906. I have access to a very well equipped workshop and the machining of the components does not concern me; in anticipation of also going down colonial boys route i started to shop around for tyres in the UK and i can not source any! yes i can ship them from the states but as i am trying to convert my 906 to have an albeit limited choice of tyres at 'reasonable' cost i do not want to have supply problems AGAIN as it rather defeats the object! my local race shop who can get any road or race tyre (so he says) was left scratching his head re D250's and my local franchised dealer shook his head and suggested the race shop! ebay so far only throws up examples accross the pond. I am lucky in that i have recently got hold of a pair of hardly worn originals so i can take my time a little. I like the look of these 'PHAAT' D250's but i wonder if there is an alternative alternative if you see what i mean that would also fit but would be a more common size? i confess i haven't researched relative sizes / aspect ratios and i am getting blinded by all the info / suggestions / alternatives on this subject, this conversion seems straight forward and viable given a supply of tyres AGAIN!! best to all. jon ![]() |

I`d take the Avon AV72 as other manufacturers mostly do not recommend their 180/60-16 for a bike like the Paso. It`s available in UK. The cheapest price I found in a fast search was http://www.nationalbiketyres.co.uk/moto ... d_144.html matching front: http://www.nationalbiketyres.co.uk/moto ... od_72.html G. |
