So,

It turns out I'm very lucky I put a 17 inch wheel on the Paso before setting out on holidays this year.....

I hit a rock wedged in a pothole while I was going around a fast corner in the mountains about 200kms outside Pamplona..... with the front wheel slowly leaking air I made it back to Pamplona (also slowly!)

In Pamplona I was lucky to find a very friendly Ducati /Kawasaki dealer. And even luckier that they had a used 17inch front Ducati Supersport wheel just lying around (the same cannot be true for a 16inch wheel or tyre!)

I thought maybe that Paso's would not be allowed in the workshop (see the sign in the photo below) but then I remembered I was in Spain and had to translate from Spanish :)

A couple of hours later all was well! A big thanks to the guys at Puro Racing in Pamplona... so now the 906 has some new Kawasaki green stickers! Well for a while.....

Jon, McTool - unfortunately it was leaking air so my roadside repair attempts were doomed :) I did stare at it a long time with a rock in hand, but some friends stopped me applying the rock + force randomly to bike parts!

Yamanima - sorry, my French language skills are not good, but from the link in Gerhards reply I think understand and can answer a bit more...

Note I used the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) 17mm 906 Paso front axle and the 17mm OEM 600SS rear axle.

Also I used a 40T rear sprocket (to fit 600SS cush drive), a longer 520 pitch chain (2x extra links I think?), and had to offset the 15T front sprocket ~1mm to get the chain and wheel alignment both straight at the same time.

Rear Brake Caliper Adaptor

Note this adpator is used with a stepped spacer to sleeve it to 17mm and set the distance from the swingarm (see below, "Item 10"). The alignment of the brake caliper to the disc requires some shims or washer to get to perfect. Also, the drawing is a bit wrong as I had to make more space around the brake caliper bolt holes to fit these spacers/washers properly.

2x Replacement Swingarm Excenters / Chain Adjustors / Rear Axle Holders

Front Brake Caliper Adaptor

Speedo Drive Plate adaptor and Wheel Bearing cover

All this work was done before I went away on holiday to Spain. It made finding a spare wheel after this accident much simpler (All I needed was a OEM Ducati 17in wheel, which many shops have, not a 16inch one which many shops do not have).

I have not created all these designs myself. I have used or modified designs posted by others on this forum, so the credit belong to them :)

I have now done 5000kms riding since these modifications, including motorways, daily commuting and winding mountain passes. I'm not 100% happy with the handling (maybe I will change to a 120/70 front tyre and fit a digital speedometer, experiment with fork height), but overall so far it is good. Braking is much better :)

Cheers,

Mick

Mick,

It would have been fitting tho if you could have beaten it back into shape with a rock. All it might have done is given you some satisfaction!

What alloy was used for the new bits??

Jon,

Indeed, the urge to hit something with a rock was strong, so maybe I should have at least tried :)

Also I should have noted materials better! Thanks for the prompt.

(1) Spacers
* Spacer Type A: spec'd as DIN 1.4031 (420 SS) – but I think from memory I ended up with 6061 or 7075 for easier machinability? Will check.
* Spacer Type B: Unknown aluminium alloy (from scrap)
* Spacer Type C: Aluminium 6061 or 6063
* Spacer Type D: Aluminium 6061 or 6063

(2) Rear Brake Caliper Adapter from 12mm Aluminium Alloy plate (DIN 3.4365; AlZnMgCu 1,5; i.e. 7075)

(3) Front Brake Caliper Adaptors (2x) from 15mm Aluminium Alloy plate (DIN 3.4365; AlZnMgCu 1,5; i.e. 7075)

(4) Eccentric chain adjustors : Aluminium 6061

(5) Stepped spacer (i.e. “Item 10” in the original post) : 6061 or 6063

(6) Speedo Adapto : Acetal (Black)

To be honest alot of the materials were either copied from the original designs on this forum or selected based on what was available at the time. Everything seems to have worked pretty well so far - no failures yet (knock on wood).

Cheers,

Mick

Mick,

Thanks for the info. I assumed it was just general Alum alloys. Nothing special and all was probably available at the shop.

Antti, sorry for the slang. I use it becasue I have to use my f%#king BlackBerry all day and if I don't shorten up some obvious words then my thumbs will fall off!!!!
