Post subject:  What not to do - fire

&^*& :,( I caused a fire while working on my Paso and in putting it out some water (about 1/2 a cup perhaps) went down the carb throats.

-------------------------------------------
Background: I was working on the electrics to get the bike turning over. I put on Dyna Coils wired to the wring cylinders (stupid). So, in the process I had the airbox off to check fuel coming through carb.
---------------------

Okay, the reason for the fire was stupidity on my part, but I better explain so others don't do the same.

The main thing is the Paso is okay :-) :P I just melted the mini tank I was using and the odd bit of tape. Bigger problem I think is the water that went down the carb throats!

My stupidity :banghead: goes like this:
I was rushed, so slopped petrol into mini tank without a funnel, so some petrol was down the side of bike and on floor. Then I had a rag near the carb throats that also then has some of this petrol on. The air box was off and the mini tank didn't have a cap on it. I had had this setup before but this time I had been sloppy with the petrol and had that wet rag near the carb throats. When turning the engine over some backfire flames come up the carb throats. Even though not firing properly, kept trying and the rag caught fire, then I flicked the rag away wrongly and the fire spread down the bike and to the petrol puddle on the floor - suddenly Whoosh! The bike was engulfed in flames! I remember looking at it in disbelief and thinking %#%^& this is out of control!

The next problem is that I had no fire extinguisher! First thing I did was call the fire brigade (via shouting to my wife, who shouted to the next door neighbours to call because she couldn't remember the emergency number (since new to Australia). The next door neighbours daughter heard my wife shouting "spider", but then her mum asked if there was a problem and they phoned the fire brigade). Drama ^*&*(.

Then after a bit of panic on my part wondering where the where the
&^&^^ was a hose (because new to this rental house and in panic) and thinking the %%%$# taps were so slow i would never get a bucket full.

Who got me thinking straight? My six year son bought me a bottle of water. So then my brain started working, as I looked down into the garage full of dark smoke with a fire glowing - so I went down there and tried that bottle of water and sure enough it did something - even though water on petrol. My brain now working I remembered the hose round the corner of the garage. First... I grabbed the mini tank which was also flaming (out of instinct), ripped it off the bike (burning my hand (&*()&^% while I fell over %&^%) and threw it out the garage into a bush, which then caught fire) at the same time some petrol had spilt on me so I was putting the fire out that was on me too. Then i got the hose and hosed it down and great the fire was out! The Paso was saved.

I then went to the kitchen to put my burned hand under water and my next door neighbour discovered the bush on fire and put that out with "their" fire extinguisher. then the fire engine turned up!

The only good thing in this seems to be that the garage door was open, so i could get to the hose and the smoke was escaping.

I hope you liked the story. Sorry, I don't have it on video. See pics below :-)

Problem now:

I got some water down the carb throats, so what do i do? My guess, is
- change the oil

just in case, also:
- change the filter to the carb
- clean the carb

Do you agree? Anything else?

Here are some pics:

drawing with my finger on the garage door that was over the fire:

Here is the remains of the mini fuel tank and the remains of my hand:

here is a pic of the melted mini fuel tank against the bush i threw it into - notice where the bush caught fire:

Here is the poor Paso with soot on it and on the ground (it did clean up okay:

Didn't your father ever tell you not to play with petrol.

If you pull the plugs out and wind it over using the starter it should get rid of most of the water. The fuel filter will be ok and the oil should be ok but if it makes you feel better then change it.

I just read your story again

screw the spark plugs out while doing this, because you cant compress water when it comes into your engine...

Did you get any of this on video?

Would be worth a fortune.

Warwick, you`re not alone. I did that 20 years back when I sprayed fuel in the carbs of my Alfa to start it up. It backfired so hard that it set the little gas on fire that had run in the airbox pan. All I had to extinguish the fire was an oily rag which was not the best idea as the consequences were similar to yours. Luckily I didn`t do that in the garage and ìt didn`t set anything else on fire. I also managed to extinguish the small fire without dumping anything on it.

Turning the engine over won`t push out all the water. There will be some smoke when you fire up the bike.
As the water is on top of the oil it won`t be necessary to change the filter but if I changed the oil I would do that automatically. If you would`ve turned over the engine w/o plugs and later started it an oil change wouldn`t be necessary but if you left it like that over night the water may have seeped by the piston rings. Probably better to do it then even if it`s just for the good conscience.

Post subject:  Re: What not to do - fire

I look back and I still have my bones shacking at the thought of a fire i had in my laboratory , where I work on my 750 Special

I was just reassembling the wiring loom, I tested everything was perfect, then I had to remove it partially in order to carry on a couple of mods and repairs, then tested again before fitting it and everything worked perfectly.

I decide to fit "definitively" using the classic ties and after working around the bike I was very pleased with the result; I connected the front loom connectors, switched on the key and tried to fire the bike.

Nothing.

the first though was I forgot something disconnected.. I rechecked everything, tried again... nothing.

Then I noticed the emergency switch was off, I turn the thing and BAMMM !!!!!!!!!! the wiring loom starts smoking, it melts the wires and starts burning any and melting all the plastic sleeve and connectors and ties.

I promptly switch it off and nothing
I take off the key ... nothing

at that point I try to pull the wires and everything was smoking and burning, couldn’t touch it , couldn’t keep my eyes open!!!!!!

I gasp for some air, then i grab a wire cutter and chop the battery cable and I manage to put the fire off.

I had to leave the place as it was literally impossible to breath without chocking; my eyes were burning like I had chillies rub on them

All the drama lasted maybe 10-15 seconds, but I was amazed of the mayhem and how fast the fire developed.

Upon inspection of the remains I realized I swapped two connectors of the front loom; (they were marked, i just simply made a silly mistake!!!

I was very surprised in discovering that there were NO fuses protecting the bike in case something like that happened; I was also surprised that two connectors could be swapped around so easyly (usually manufacturers try to use different typs or colors in order to avoid this from happening.

If I had the temporary tank on the bike (plastic) I probably would have ended with my laboratory burned down and myself in Hospital.

when you work with electrics, make sure they the battery has always a proper fuse in line and in any case always keep a SUITABLE fire estinguisher at hand.

Glad to hear things went as well as they did!

This is why I always carry TWO fire extinguishers in the Porsche. One bolted to the floor behind the driver's seat, and another behind the rear panel in the hatch area.

On the Paso I carry a mini powder extinguisher too, and yet another in the tank bag.

I have used my extinguishers at least 6 times in the last 20 years, but only twice to put out fires in my own car. (Once an electrical fault in an RX-7's window switch, and another from a small brake fluid fire in the engine bay of another RX-7.

They are worth their weight in gold, I reckon.

I am sorry for the event, but I have to say you are a great story teller, have you thought about writing a novel??

I also have fire extinguishers laying everywhere, as the Greek father of Medicine Hipocrates said (in free translation) "To take measures in order to prevent an illness is much easier than to cure it"

Drop in to your local DIY store and buy a foam fire extinguisher and always have this out and easy to reach when doing any work with the fuel systems. I have to say it sounds as tho you got away with it but that was close!

Dont spose you thought of throwin on a few shrimps,   *uck me !!, Romus your the only guy I know that would sacrifice his bike to start his own bush fire. Aaah I wish I seen that , it would be nearly as funny as the time Pooh Crawford set fire to me , yeah , there was a fair bit of running round in circles I can tell you
