that could theoretically happen if the brushes are so worn the come out of their guides. In that case the windings could get damaged.

Brushes don't require to remove the starter to be changed. search in the forum how to work on it :)

To remove the starter you will have to take off the left side engine casing etc. To access the brushes only remove the oil cooler blank bolts and starter motor cap. I am fairly sure the 748 uses the same starter if it is really that bad, a common part.

All L twins in Ducati use the same starter :)

Thanks to all. It was a short on the internal cable connection straight onto the casing after it slipped round whilst connecting cable.

It seems from comments that most parts are common with other models, does this include ignition items, ignition key etc, as my manual does not show grey cable on switch but there is one.

the wiring diagram shows a grey yellow (GRY) cable that runs to the left handle bar switch.
Numerous engine parts can be found on other Ducs. The Digiplex ignition is rather specific as is the ignition switch. The ignition switch from other Pasos will fit.

Similar digiplex ignitions were installed on Fiat and Lancia cars, but with a differend mapping. Ingition switch fron Cagiva Elefant can fit ;)
