Hello,
I am new to this site and I am hoping somebody might have some advice. My 907i.e. paso best I can explain it, keeps bogging, hesitating especially when it heats up and I am doing a lot of stop and go. Also at freeway speeds I feel it cut out or hesitate, I am afraid it is going to completely cut out while I am on the freeway. Anybody have this problem or any suggestions on what to look for I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Start with the simple stuff. How old is the fuel filter? Plugs?

New plugs, new filter, new voltage regulator, new alternator rotor.

there are several "basics" to check...but you need to consider that if the bike runs fine until it heats up (and I'm guessing say about 10 minutes) that the "basics" [ plugs, filters, etc] aren't the problem.
If it was the filter blocked the bike would run like crap all the time.
You can check that the fuel pump is delivering 3 Bar pressure.
On a bike this age I would check the plug leads as a matter of course.

Some Paso 907ies develop a misfire; usually between 3,000 - 4,000 RPM. There is a number of posts on this site related to the anomaly. The bike runs fine under acceleration but is jerky at cruise...above 5,000 RPM the problem is gone; probably fly-wheel effect.
I don't think the 907 is really designed to run well under load below 2,500 RPM, although they idle great, don't they?

You could try my patented method (posted here) of putting a cigarette butt in the air tube from the air box to the ATS. This will smooth out air box vacuum / pressure pulse and it seems the dampening effect helps the ECU cope better with engine timing.

I'd be interested if you try this to hear if it works for you; a few others have reported good results. It doesn't cost anything and can't damage anything. If you have small hands it only takes 15 minutes to do.

Thank you for the great advice I will try the cigarette butt and see if that works. I will let you know what the result is.

I have never smoked in my life (but, there can be always a first time).
If I had another time such issue I'll ask to you some butts for a loan       .

Always off topic.

So, we could change the sign:

"Please put the cigarette butts in the bins provided or in the air tube from the air box to the ATS"   .

Ciao

I admit: I am a victim of over-effective advertizing.
I have smoked for years..and will continue to burn every cigarette that I can... *cough*
I feel that if I keep burning them there will be less for other unfortunate souls, so I am saving lives... and that with the high taxes that I pay on every packet that I'm doing my bit for the country.

I recently read somewhere that if you got all the cigarette butts from smokers in Australia in one year and placed them end-to-end (the butts, not the smokers) that they would go around the world twice. I decided I didn't have time for this (even though it seemed like a worthy project and would like to travel the world, lining up ciggie butts...) and i considered I'd have assholes like Jaffa messing up my neatly arranged circumferential lines behind me...

...so being environmentally conscious I have needed to find somewhere "covert yet convenient" to put all the butts and also put them to good use. The air tube on a 907ie seemed like a good place to start...

of course you non-smoking heathens wouldn't understand true altruism unless it slapped you in the face.

How old is the battery? When the battery is on it's way out the bike will do weird things, like start missing. For a while I thought my bike would sometimes miss when I turned left. Then I thought it was when I turned at all. Silly thing was, I was on a pretty twisty road when I was "diagnosing" it. Of course it missed in turns ya maroon, there were no straights on that road.

Anywhos, turns out it was the battery. Low voltage makes the fuel injection unhappy.

If the bike doesn't turn over real well when starting I'd check/replace the battery before worrying too much about other things. Harley makes a nice gel battery that casts around $75 IIRC. Works like a champ.

Thanks for the info on the battery, it was new when I got the bike. I have had the bike for approx. 6months. It seems that the battery is taking a charge and holds the charge. I haven't had a chance to try the cigarette butt trick that the other guy said, I have been to busy.

Low battery voltage [or charging failure] can upset the ECU...but it would be below 12 volts (say 11.5V) ; the bike hardly cranks over on start at this voltage.
I have had the regulator fail and experienced riding with the battery discharging; the bad running is constant, not intermittant with lots of back-fires as the voltage drops.

Poor running on a 907 can be due to many things...but most will make it run badly all the time. The heat related relationship to the misfire is very similar to my experience and a few others...

I still don't know exactly why the ciggie butt works; it could be vacuum pulses or even tiny intake valve back-fires that occur during running; whatever it is the butt damps the pressure wave to the air pressure sensor.

I know the ciggie butt sounds too simple (and back-yard / butcher mechanics)..but I bet you'd go and shell out $200 on a new sensor or oscillating decraminator if it would fix the misfire.

I could not ride the bike for more than 1 year. My ass told me that the misfire was not doing the drive train any good, it needed to be fixed. It was most apparent at cruise and I could not enjoy cruising at all. I remember looking at the street signs with how far to go wishing that they would be less. I couldn't sell it like it was and it was costing a fortune in parts and mechanics to work on it.

now I enjoy riding it...

I can't figure out where to put that cigarette butt at in the airbox. All I see is the mass air flow sensor, one other sensor which has a hole just bigger than a pin hole.

the MAP sensor is the air pressure sensor on the outside of the air box. [not to be confused with the ATS -air temp sensor]
The Prt03 map sensor is held on the box by three points. It looks like this:
http://www.tradekey.com/selloffer_view/id/1267107.htm

there is a short hose that comes from the air box to the PRT03 MAP sensor. The hose is what needs to be damped - NOT PLUGGED. A ciggie butt pushed in tight will work OK.
You still need some air flow - but just restrict it enough so it's hard to push air through.

a quick side note to this is that the only EFI models that use the manifold pressure are the 907, 851 and 888. All the others Ducatis after these the air pressure used in the map is only ambient. maybe Ducati worked out the difficulties with monitoring the manifold pressure on a big vee twin - particularly at low RPM. The 851 and 888 are more "performance" than touring - so it's unlikely they encountered the same low RPM issues.

Please let us know how it works for you...
