Post subject:  slight oil from clutch cover

Took a short ride today, and when I got hom I noticed a slight amount of oil coming from the bottom of the clutch cover. I suppose there is a seal leaking. Can this be replaced by pulling the clutch basket and getting behind it or am I guessing wrong?

Yes, There is a regular seal back there. I'll look for a picture.

For removing the seal this to can be done with the engine/clutch casing on the bike. Just drill some smal holes in the oilseal, and use a modified exhaust spring tool and pull it out, but it need som force/muscle.

Oil the seal, center the seal. (no need to try to drive it in)
Use the clutch basket and 4 bolts to pull the seal in, just tighten evenly this will get the seal 90-95 % of the way.

For the last bit a mallet (heavy is good) and an object that rests on the outer suface of the oilseal and drive it in the rest of the way(oilseal flat against the engine casings).

Jon, Thanks so much if you can find the picture of the seal. Do you drill the holes to run screws into to tie on to the spring compressor, or maybe use a rope seal extractor maybe. I read on the web somewhere that these things are almost imposible to pull out. If so, then I suppose the cases must be split. Do you think it's heat from the clutch, maybe I need to service the breather, or just getting old that causes this? There's not a chance the oil could be coming from the clutch push rod is there? :?:

The seal is #8.

I have used a slide hammer/dent puller that I have laying around. The cases do not need to be split. The clutch housing just unbolts and comes off if you wish to knock it out from the inside. I would say this is a fairly rare failure on a Duc.

Thanks Jon. I'll take the cover off this evening and look at it. Are there any O- rings or a small seal for the clutch push rod that could be leaking a small amount of oil into the clutch?

No, there's no oil that can come thru the push rod. I guess you could have a bad slave cylinder that could drip brake fluid out of the cover. If you pull the cover you should see it pretty quick.

+1 on Sam.
And there are 2 Orings on the pushrod.

I appreciate all the help and information. I pulled the clutch cover and found no oil on the clutch, however there was some duct. I did find the hose connected to the breather was loose, and it looks like the oil being dismissed from the breather had found its way around the back of the clutch housing and was being wicked into the cover through the 2 openings of the bottom of the clutch cover. I thoroughly cleaned everthing in that area, and will see what happens the next time I have it out for a ride.

Is there anywhere to actually purchase an engine manual for a 907IE? I would like to understand the inner workings a little better ie; where the seals and o-rings etc are.

Thanks,
Preston
