Post subject:  Wheel bearing issue???

Hi friends,
today after a little, little trip with my wife on the rear seat, I washed my black 907 and then I was bringing her to the garage.
My garage has a little slope. So I stopped the engine and let the bike going to the slope.
So, I have heard some noise: "clock, clock" - pause - "clock, clock" - pause - "clock, clock"..... that couldn't be heard with the engine running.
That noise seems come from the rear axle, near to the sprocket.
The odd thing is that the noise is lower, quite null, when I turned the wheel backwards.
I tried to see at the suspension, at the rear caliper, at the chain guard, but all seems right.
I guess it can be a wheel bearing, even if the bike has only 11.000 km on the clock
Some advice???
Ciao

Hi Franci,

Have you had the rear tyre replaced lately?
Sometimes, less that experienced mechanics leave the spacer out of the chain side of the wheel when they replace it. This can cause the nuts on the sprocket carrier to strike the swingarm, gouging out a tunnel in your shiney aluminium.

I hope its not that, probably just something simple like the bearing.

Good luck.

I've had that noise from a teeth worn on sprocket, but that would be visually noticable also.

u might also have a cush drive bolt broke and rolling around inside the carrier area?

thats what led to the PO parking my 907 for 6 years till i rescued it my understanding is they updated the cush drive bolt size? im not sure though.....

No tires replaced.
I will check as soon as possible chain, sprocket and bolts.
My mechanic told me that it could be only the brake pad, so that the noise could disappear after a little trip...
What do you think about???

Post subject:  Re: Wheel bearing issue???

in all the years of owning 20+ bikes I've only had wheel bearing problems on dirt bikes that saw the bearings getting wet in puddles / rivers etc...I'm not saying it won't be the bearing but unless the bike sees severe riding conditions it's not likely.

if the bearing has failed to the extent it's noisy (as described) the wheel will possibly wobble if shaken from side to side; it's not worth a short trip and failure under load/speed (and associated damage) to find it WAS the bearing...

I'm assuming you have the standard cast wheels...which removes the variable of a spoked wheel and noises from broken or loose spokes.

fairly quick diagnosis:

1. check the swing arm for rubbing of the bolts..it is possible a broken bolt is loose and contacting sporadically. (easy to test - put a spanner and check if any of the bolts spin...)

2. ...remove the rear brake caliper; spin wheel..takes 3 minutes...

3. the next variable would be to remove the chain - but most of you won't use the splitable clip type links??
this is a fair bit of effort, but let's face it...if it's not the brake or the chain the wheel MUST come off to either remove/replace the bearing or at least inspect the cush drive bolts...
a possibility is the chain is snubbing (wrapping around further) on the rear sprocket - either from worn (shark-finned) teeth or possibly from sticky chain lube...correct chain tension should fix if this is the problem...

it's hard to diagnose chain noise issues without riding the bike; the chain pass height on the centrestand is over the swingarm and this affects tension.

if none of the above determine the problem you need to get the wheel assessed to make sure it's not cracked or bent.

Front pads w/o springs use to rattle.
Put the bike on the centerstand and make weels run free, searching for any noise and freeplay expecially on chain tension

When I heard that noise, I tried to shake the rear wheel to see if there was some play.
The wheel was steedy, so as the suspension.
Unfortunately, I'm very busy at work, so that this week I couldn't check the bike.
I hope there were no bolts' issues.
Many thanks for your advice.

Only to let you know.
Yesterday, after long time (due to the damned work) I found the time to look at the bike.
I planned to keep out the rear caliper first and the chain later.
But, turning the wheel with the hands.... She didnt do any noise.... Damned Ducati....
I had a little trip but no noise!
So I have to fix only a little oil leak.
