Post subject:  907...how to check ignition timing???

I have the bike almost finished and done a complete service and now ready for roadworthy inspection, I was also thinking of checking the ignition timing with a timing light, I can see the sight glass with yellow marker on left side of motor...but I'm not sure how to do it... Ken (duc906) has a good post on cam timing... then theres posts for twin spark plug modification?? but I cant find much on checking the ignition timing...can this be done or is it a fixed electronic non adjustable parameter...can someone point me in the right direction

I think you will find this is controlled by the ECU and the 'chip'. It would be mapped to suit load, speed temps, air presure, emissions etc.

There is a good read about setting the CO2 , TPS, butterflies etc, was
http://www.fuelinmoto.com.au but that link is dead, I have a blurry but readable jpeg I can send you if I can find it.

Whats the twin spark info ???

Also remember the cigarette filter in the air pressure line trick!!

cheers

thanks for the link Gerhard, interesting reading... G'day Nigel, you also have a 907, did you ever connected it to a computer diagnostic machine to check the whole system and make sure that is running properly? my bike is running good, the only thing is that, its a bit rought when riding at low revs.. but I think thats normal for this kind of bike, than again the 907 is 18yrs old now and there are a lot of sensors and probes that have never been checked. I might consider some sort of dyno tune one day soon.

I was saying before, a while back I read about a post on this forum with instructions on how to fit a extra spark plug on the cam belt side of the engine for twin spark...personally...I think 99% of all petrol motors run fine with only one plug, I would concentrate on the original design and make sure that those bits are in good order.

Nigel, one last thing...ceramic coated exaust!...is that for orbit re-entry?

Seems to me that sensors either work or don“t.

Cleaning injectors could be a good idea & that all electrical connections are good.
Checking TPS, throttle sync & CO also helps.

Claude, hi!
I am thinking that I would like to get all the systems calibtrated when I get the valves checked, like in the 'fuel in moto'info.
I would like to go to Bob Brown's Melbourne Desmo, but its a a long way from me, so I was going to call Brad, The Bike Boy, out in Oakleigh. [Bob has my other motor awaiting me to bring out the new barrels & pistons for bike 2]
I wouldn't be surprised if throttles and CO2 settings were out.
[I recently cut open and fixed the TPS on my 928S4 , as it was not working at all.]

The DOCV had a tech day at Motologic, in Cambellfield.
http://www.motologic.com.au
They are racing Dukes in the Aust superbike series.
They sell "Bike Interceptor" http://www.bikeinterceptor.com/
a very interesting program, like Power Commander, that plugs between the ECU and the injectors. It then is remapped to sort out the fuel injection issues that are put in by the manufacturer to get past emmission testing, usually resulting in flat spots etc. There is another version that also does timing, but not needed according to them for a road bike. Should be underAUD $600.
The system really sorts out Harleys!

Long story, but after all the other stuff is sorted then I might like to give that a try.

My bike is pretty rough too below 3000rpm, seems to be a characteristic :dunno: ,
I recently changed to NGK iridium plugs after I found a new NGK wouldn't fire under load in the cylinder. Sparked ok out but wouldn't work . My first dud plug. Anyway it does seem to run better on the iridiums, picks up from lower revs , below 3000, easier, exhaust sounds deeper, which is a surprise. Bike certainly feels like it got some go   , so I presume most other stuff is working as expected. I want to fit a 14 tooth cog as well, should help out in town.

The ceramic coating , is a coating on the inside and outside of the pipe. It reduces the amount of heat, not cool to touch! It also lessens the heat cycles, so exhausts last longer and it doesn't rust. The main reason was that my pipes looked pretty dirty and i wanted to reduce some heat inder my bum. I am putting some DEI Titanium Exhaust wrap around the vertical cylinder to keep heat off the shock and my bum!
It cost AUD$230 to have the exhaust, collets, ring blasted and coated.
http://www.competitioncoatings.com.au/
call the Blast Factory, Andrew, 9354 8021, 10 Audrey St, Nth Coburg [Melbourne]
They also media blast anything, so far wheels ,fairings, frame, lots of bits.....
and Coburg Powder Coaters , 9354 9154, is around the corner.
Competition coatings aslo do all those piston coatings, heat on top and oil for the sides. I have read some motors being fully built with all the coatings, but again the staff worker thinks it wouldn't make much difference for a road motor, still its only money!
ciao

Post subject:  Re: 907...how to check ignition timing???

thanks for the info Nigel, that link for the fuel injection gadget has a dyno workshop in Boronia, I will have a talk to them and see what they say, I dont mind parting with some cash if the product improves torque delivery...specially lower revs
Regarding the ceramic coating, it looks very neat, similar to chrome
when I had the staintunes fitted to my bike I also included the stainless steel cross-over pipes which clamp on to approx 20cm of the cut original pipe from motor, I dont think Ill worry about coating mine.
Im sure I'll see you on one of the rides sometimes...and check out your machinery then!!
ciao
