I just returned from my first Paso ride. What a bike. Excellent Performance. I used to have a big Monster, but power, acceleration and handling make my old monster seem like a slug. A very impressive machine in most all respects. The only two faults are the rear brake (pretty ineffective, but so was my Monster, probably a Ducati trait), and the noisy clutch (as was my Monster). I will be studying everyones clutch threads to see if anyone has already solved my problem. It looks like my bike has spent the majority of its life sitting. Its waking up nicely though. But a 21 year old clutch can have just about anything wrong from dry rot to just being dirty, to having someone put it together wrong. I guess I need to get to know the bike sooner or later, and I might as well start with the clutch. It is probably the original clutch. Should I buy a Barnett replecement clutch? Is it a good idea to add an extra fiber disk in the rear? What are most people doing to their old clutches?

I would'nt be worried about the clutch noise.
As you said, it's the same of you old Monster and it's a Ducati dry clutch treat.
On both my 907s, I have the clutch covers drilled. So the rattle of clutch is more noisy
You must to worry only if the clutch is slippery.
Definitely, I think you have'nt got any problem.

I solved my noisy clutch problem. I put about 60 miles of freeway çruising this morning on my Sunday morning Taco Cruise. I took my Mp3 player and headphone amplifier and turned it up really loud. I could not hear my clutch at all. But I turned it off when I turned into my neighborhood and the clutch wasn't making all that much noise anymore. I guess it needs some miles put on it to loosen it all up. It ran Really Good this morning. I am more impressed this morning than yesterday. The only negative I have is that it is hard to go only 70 in sixth gear. It wants to go about 80 cruising in sixth gear. I think I am developing a Ducati Attitude again.

After about 230 miles on my long sitting 1992 907ie, my clutch has quieted down on its own. It is now no more noisy than my old Monster used to be. The motor has loosened up nicely. If you do not watch the speedo when passing someone, you can easily top 100 mph and miss your freeway exit. Not to mention officer Friendly and his Ray Gun. I got my seat recovered by the Texas Steelhorse Saddles guy here in a Gucci-esc Ostrich cover and it is actually comfortable to ride on. That old Duc is actually the most stable bike I have ever ridden. Now I see why you guys go to this much trouble to keep these old bikes on the road. I went to the Ducati shop yesterday, looking for some touchup paint. They told me about colorrite.com and I will probably order some from them. The new Ducatis, although beautiful, look rather flimsey and uncomfortable to ride. And of course thay made it clear they have No Interest in helping me out finding any parts if the need be, but with my past experience with Ducati dealers, I will be better off looking online. Anyway, thank everyone in this site for helping me realize what an interesting bike the old Paso is. I have always thought they are beautiful bikes, but they are actually Good Motorcycles. That said, I am sure something will konk out on it tomorrow, but its all about the journey, right?

W 14/40 sprockets, 100 km/h = 4000 RPM in sixth on mine.

I have 64,000 miles on my bike. I had the engine rebuilt because the alternator rotor exploded.

I have had Barnett, Surflex, and now I have OEM Ducati. I like the OEM because the last time I bought one the OEM price was about the same as the others. It seems to last longer. Remember to use steel tang fiber clutch plates with a steel basket. Use only aluminum fiber plates with an aluminum basket. The harder steel will wear out the aluminum. I just took my clutch out and cleaned it up. It was chattering at take offs and downshifts. I wash off the dust, use a sander to shine up the steel plates, and check them with a caliper for thickness. Then I tried a different stacking order that I got off of this site.
Started with a fiber/friction plate (the plate with tangs), then a regular steel plate, then a concave/spring plate with dot facing out, then alternating friction plates with steel plates until I got to the end but the third to last plate was another concave/spring plate, then a fiber plate, then the last steel plate. This made my stack thicker than the 38mm but on my bike this is what works. My clutch is now the quietest that I can remember.

You can order OEM parts from Ducati of Omaha, or parts from Bevel Heaven, or someone here will know where to get what you need. There are a lot of suppliers in the UK and Germany and prices with shipping is not that bad. I started using K&N oil filters and brand name synthetic motorcycle oil instead of hard to get and expensive Ducati filters and spectro oils.

The other major thing to do is checking the TPS voltage and position, balancing the throttle bodies, setting the air screws. This smoothes out the engine greatly.

I wrecked my bike a couple of years ago and using this site I was able to get all the parts and information I needed. Some guys just sent me the parts at no cost, others traded with me for parts I had. Unbelievable.

I have decided to not fix my clutch until its broke. I have learned to ride it without slipping the clutch. If I go a little easy starting off, I have enough power to accelerate easily to any speed that any sane person could want. As far as freeway cruising goes, in 5th gear I am turning 4000 rpm. On my Roadstar, turning 4000 rpm is a serious situation. Thats just putting along on the Paso. I have decided to stop trying to make the Ducari operate like I want it to and learn to use it like it wants to be used. I am going to stop worrying and Love the Duc.
