Post subject:  Joining the club - MBD

The 907 has been on my bucket list for years, ever since I sat on one of the first Pasos at the races at Laguna Seca in 1987 when it was first shown in public at the Ducati tent. Someday, I always said. But there was always a reason for not doing it. Of course besides the fact that there are 4 Ducatis already in the stable. but I ran across an offer I can't refuse.
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/4684097040.html
So, last night, i put a deposit on it, and I'll pick it up next weekend.

Now I'm making my list of what to do first.
- Belts, fuel change, oil change, clean those white rims, new battery, etc. bike hasn't run for several year.
- Finding a turnsignal/mirror.
- Tell the wife that I bought another bike.

Since I have been on this site for about 8 years now, I think I know a bit of what I'm in for, I haven't paid much attention to the fuel injection or water cooling of the 907, so will be asking questions about that, when I get to it.

Wish me well. I plan to just put it back to good working order, and no big plans for modifications. Can anyone identify the silencers on the bike? Not stock, but he has the stock ones in the shed.

Cheers,
Phil

Hello Phil, not bad.
Looks like you`ll need both mirrors as the other one is only fixed with some tape.
The silencers look like the stock ones.

I think the bike could have been on the ground before already. The broken mirror is the cheap Cagiva unit and the spoiler of the front screen is missing. The tank on the left rear looks dented but maybe that`s only a shadow.
I also wonder what those wires hanging out of the right rear fairings are. Did the US 907ie also come with the non Euro taillight ?

Nice find for the Bay Area. With a little TLC consider yourself a convert!

Well, I got it home, and all looks good so far. A bit dirty, but OK.
- No tool kit.
- Last ran 5 years ago, when it got dropped, and put away wet. Garaged all its life.
- Last service was 5 years ago and the top end was done by Munroe's in SF. (good shop)
- 5 year old Macadams, with plenty of rubber. (good enough for now)
- Gas tanks is 3/4 full. (What do you do with old gas?)
- Chain and sprockets look fairly new.
- Top fairing air foil is gone on the to of the windshield. Anyone got a spare?
- Exhaust is stock. Not sure what the P.O. thought they were, but they look all stock to me.
- Only mods are the chip in the ECU and the K&N air cleaner.
- 15mm bar risers.
- Napoleon bar end mirrors.

I'm going out in a few minutes to put a fresh battery in it to see what lights up, and drain the gas.

Now, which exhaust pipes should I put on there?

Cheers, Phil

Washed the bike, and took all the body work off to drain the tank and change the oil.
- Air cleaner is stock Ducati item. Seems the last time it was in the shop, the mechanic decided the K&N wasn't right for the bike (not the first person to remove a K&N filter)
- The air box has three 40mm holes drilled in the lid, but they were taped over. Still had stock snorkels installed. Inside the air box was spotlessly clean.
- The rubber isolator mounts for the dash have died. Guess I'll search the forum for the replacement strategy.
- The clock is rather noisy. I guess I'll do a search to see whether I should simple disconnect it.
- One of the rubber isolator mounts for the ECU has also failed.
- The radiator overflow tank has been repaired, a time or two.
- There was no fluid in the overflow tank. Don't know if it holds water yet.
- Clutch looks fine. Steel basket, steel plates. A bit of rattle. Closed, stock cover. Lever action feels right.
- Fuel lines were not F.I. rated, and did not have F.I. clamps, so that will be next weekends project.

I put a battery in it, and all the lights work properly, and the engine turns over. Compression seems were it should be. I used the pump to empty the tank, and it seems fine. Belts are stock Ducati, and look rather fresh.

All in all, it looks good for $1200. No red flags yet.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Cheers,
Phil

Thanks for the part numbers Higgy. I ordered parts last week, and installed them last night.
Replaced the fuel line also over the weekend, as it was not F.I. rated hose or clamps.
New battery and fork oil are in the mail, and I should be pushing the start button on Saturday to see how well it runs, or if it does at all. Overall the bike looks great. Hardly, if ever, ridden in the rain. Been garaged all of its life. Very little rust or oxidation. The tires are 14 years old, and have almost no wear, which infers that previous owner hardly rode it at all in his 9 years of ownership. Oil looked great when I drained it. Nice light amber color.
Got replacement mirrors and scoops to make it look a bit better.

Cheers, Phil

Belts? I'd be putting a pair on if its been static for 5 years.

Nice bike, good price. congrats.

Cheers, Keith.

Belts were put on just before it got put in the garage. Basically less than 100 miles on them and temperature controlled the entire time. I looked at them, and they look brand new.

Got a pair of scoops off of EBay. I didn't realize that 907 scoops are different from the 750 / 906 scoops. Looking for a right side fairing and scoop.

Gents, I heard music. 907 music.
this evening around 10:00 I got all the critical items buttoned down enough to see if she indeed does run like the P.O. claimed it did. And indeed it does. Fired right up, and settled right down, and idled, just like it should. Sounded pretty good. Ran out of time to take it for a test ride, but basically confirmed that it does run, and the engine sounds good. All good so far.

Installed new fuel lines, new battery, cleaned up all the connectors and put Silicone grease on them all. Changed the oil, and the gas. Checked the filter, and it was a BMW unit and only 6 years old, which kinda infers it was installed 5 years ago at it last service at Munroe's. Since this bike did very few miles since that service, I called it good. Inside the tank looks great. no rust. It was put up 5 year ago with about 3 gallons in the tank.

Cosmetically, she's a 8, but mechanically she's a 9+ from what I can tell so far.

Now, I'm going to remove those 14 year old tires that look almost new. Anyone have recommendations on what to put on there? I've been a bit of Pirelli fan on the ST4s and the Sport. Should I go with the 170 or is there an advantage to go with a 180 rear?

Should I just assume the coolant is past its prime and change it all out?

Cheers,
Phil
