Don't forget to balance the injector bodies. Particularly if someone has been trying to fiddle with the air screws. I think they are even listed in the Workshop manual as idle adjust screws?

Yes good point Nick. The throttles were balanced recently and I have not messed with any of that linkage so hopefully still okay.
In removing everything from inside the tank, I noticed a crack in the short length of gas line between fuel pump and filter. I bought new submersible hose from Ducati so removed the cracked piece and cut it open to see if the exterior crack went through to the inside and in fact it did. This would certainly lower the pressure of fuel to the injectors. Also I blew through the old fuel filter then the new filter. The new one seemed unrestricted compared to the old one of course that is just a rough test but it sure seemed like the old filter was restricted. All new hoses inside the tank, put everything back together. It fired right up and seems to be running fine. The bike now idles at about 300 rmp higher than before which tells me there is more fuel getting the injectors. I will have the gases checked on the dyno to confirm it is back to fueling properly but I am very confident it is now fixed. A fuel pressure test would have indicated this problem two years back if I had one to hook up and use. Of course I didn't so went about it the long way but have learned quite a bit about how the bike is put together so that's positive.
Thanks for everyone's ideas on this. Looks like I might just be able to ride this darn machine again!

Checked about everything I could think of checking but did not come up with anything that made any major difference in the lean fueling. Thinking it must be related to the ECU but have no way to confirm that. So I bought a Power Commander 5 and installed it. The one I bought was from an 848 without O2 sensor. A note here that the polarity of the injector connector cap needs to be reversed as apparently around 1997, Ducati switched the connector leads from what the 907 had. Took it back to my dyno fuel programming guy and he claims it is all dialed in. He ran some 12-14 pulls on the dyno with it to get the maps correct. I am now making 80 rear wheel horsepower max at around 8,000. No lean issues. I am picking it up this weekend and once I ride it, I will report back. Mid range dynos a lot stronger so should be an easier launch that in the past. What's interesting is that Power Commander says they have no product to fit the 907. Anxious to see how it rides and if it works properly.

Put about 200 miles on it a couple of Saturdays ago and it rode wonderfully until the idle would not drop below about 2,500 rpm. Problem was traced to a loose connection at the three wire lead coming from the TPS. This would send a false signal to the PC telling the PC the throttle was open when in fact it was closed. Rode another 200 miles yesterday and it was flawless. The installation of the PC 5 has really turned the bike around for me. Unfortunately I'm about out of decent riding weather for the year.

Sorry Tamburinifan as I have not answered your question from some time ago. I do not have any pics but can remember the Power Commander V hook up. It is very simple really. The PCV comes with two injector leads which plug directly onto the two injector heads. The stock injector leads are removed, the new PCV leads plugged onto the injector heads, and the stock injector leads plugged onto the new PCV injector leads. So the PCV injector leads are essentially installed between the injector and the stock injector leads. There is also a lead from the PCV that connects to the APS lead. I believe there is probably a ground wire and hot wire to connect as well. The leads are reversed from the 907 to the 848 on the injector connections so the wiring will be reversed once hooked up without changing polarity. The PCV was made for the 848 and apparently Ducati reversed the polarity on their injector plug wires sometime after the 907. Go figure. It took me far longer to access everything than the hook up took. The PCV is quite small and fits nicely into some unused space in the battery box.

I rode again a couple of weeks back and it continues to amaze me how well it fuels and rides.

He means TPS, it taps into the variable output of the throttle position sensor.
