The swing arm shows no damage and the local Ducati dealer has the spacer so, for now, I'm o.k.
I still dont know what happened here......a mystery......

I agree Gerhard....new parts, tried wrong way around, the spacer sits directly on the steel retainer ring (first picture), I can imagine after tightening the axle and riding, it would shortly destroy the hub.....just for the record...this is the WRONG way..easy enough to get wrong..
