A while back , I removed the rear wheel, new tire, cleaned up everything, checked bearings etc...put it back together, no issues.....until....I was perusing the parts book and noticed the spacer assembly is not the same....in the image, spacer 22 has a groove for circlip 27. My part 22 does not have a groove, no circlip and it was installed backwards, otherwise there is nothing to hold the bearing in.....my question is, can the cush drive be installed backwards?...is the parts image wrong?....I put it together the way it came apart, didnt notice anything strange, no excessive play or binding.....

I had mine off to fit a new tyre last week. As said above, the circlip holds the bearing in place.

How was the wheel installed if you don`t have spacer #25 ?!

If you look at the Stein Dinse online parts catalogue you find that that spacer is #71310321A and was superseded by #71310321B.
If you click on the "order" link you get to another site that shows a picture of it and a list of all Ducatis that use the same part. In this case:

Ducati 600 SS `95/97
Ducati 750 SS `91
Ducati 750 SS `92
Ducati 750 SS `94
Ducati 750 SS i.e.
Ducati 851 `90 SP
Ducati 851 `91-`92
Ducati 888 Superbike `92
Ducati 888 `93->
Ducati 900 SS `90
Ducati 900 SS `92
Ducati 900 SS F.E. `98
Ducati 900 SS inj. `99
Ducati 900 SS/SL `94-`97
Ducati 907 I.E. `92
Ducati 1000 SS i.e.
Ducati Monster 600 `94
Ducati Monster 600 `98

Ducati Monster 750 `00
Ducati Monster 900 `93
Ducati Monster 900 `94
Ducati Monster 900 `98
Ducati Monster 900 i.e. `00

You can buy a used one for $20 on ebay or visit or call your local Ducati dealership and have them order a new one for $13.58. The circlip (#88440011A) which is used on the same bikes costs $2.10. (on ebay at least $10 incl. shipping :banghead: )

Thanks again, Gerhard........the backwards spacer left a small space that had another steel spacer taking up the play...it all looked normal to me at the time....the ridge on the #22 spacer held the bearings in so I thought this was normal..obviously I did not see the groove in the housing...

Honestly, nothing is easy in my life these days.......here's what I have, explains why I didnt realise I needed a circlip.......

Bearings are 47mm, 25mm, 12 mm, which I'm guessing are wrong, I would think 10mm would give room for a clip.....so was it machined out for some reason? I suppose I should find a housing and do it right......what say you?..

Now, looking at the picture Gerhardt posted, I think it was machined down to the original groove...I wonder why....

You are too quick on ordering parts. Another look at the Stein Dinse online parts catalogue would have shown that the bearings are 6005-2RS1 which are indeed 47x25x12mm.
Did the bearings sit correctly and which depth does the sprocket carrier measure?

Comparing your sprocket carrier and the picture I posted I notice something.
Your spacer sticks out more and the center of the sprocket carrier is not that high. The top area has a marked surface and isn`t flat. There`s one area that could have been the circlip grovve. So for whatever reason some material may have been shaved off the sprocket carrier.

I agree although I dont understand why that would be done...
Gerhard, I didnt see any other option than to replace the carrier....

maybe that damage is a result of installing the conical swingarm spacer (25) the wrong way around with its wider side towards the sprocket carrier instead of towards the swingarm.
Doesn`t seem likely tho if the spacer is 45mm in diameter as mentioned here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ducati-Rim-Spro ... 2005220150
