Hey guys,

While I was changing the oil today, I discovered some small metal parts on the magnet that is attached to the drain plug..... the biggest part is approx 7mm long and looks like it used to be part of a M3 bolt. vagually some sort of thread is visible.
Has someone got any idea what is going on inside my Duc?

thanks and greetings,

Sebastiaan

Hi, that really doesn`t look good. You`ll definetely have to open your engine and find the parts where these have broken off from. Did you have any problem changing gears ? I guess I would remove the left side engine cover first and check everything closely, but I`m afraid you still have to open the engine itself as you don`t know if there isn`t any other part still flying around inside.

You ARE LUCKY GUY, if Your engine seems to function well still !!!!!!! Open immediatelly your engine to avoid more very bad damages!!! Open first left cover, casue its easy to open engine still if frame and then more, if You cant find anything . That really doesnt look good... :,( :,( :,( such metal parts can cause plenty of harm inside it. think, what will happen, if such parts glog some oil lines, etc..... I wouldnt ride with that engine, before open it.... :,(

Hi Sebastiaan,

as allready pointed out this looks like disaster at hand.
part upper left look like a part of a gear to me.
In the crankcases it self are not such small bolts. Gearshifting on the left maybe.
your clutch is dry and on the outside.

But you have to open her up before wrecking the engine beyond repair

..btw, seems, that those parts have "rolled" in engine already some times, cause all parts are "round" already.... :,(

I'm wondering the engine was still working, and hasn't been locked   .
Good luck.
Ciao

Holy Sh%t that looks bad. As has been written, pull the left side cover and see if there are any broken gears in there. There are a few. I think you are in for a full engine take down.

In case you now don`t consider selling the bike, but decide to rebuild the engine you should change the crankshaft bearings when you`re at it.

I would change ALL bearings, if have to open hole engine, cause You can buy near all Ducati bearings very cheaply from normal bearing shop. Small investment and then no need to think bearings for very long time.

isnt there something about an oil galley "plug" or screw that is in the crank that can back out?

not sure, i have never found anything remotely that large in my oil when changing (whew!)

I think you're right.
there might be a little screw to block that gallay.
But I think when that screw comes out, you're out of oil pressure.
killing your engine right away. but this one is still "running"
