Greetings, 907 thread. I am going over my new 907, have it up on the lift with all the bodywork off, looks pretty good, 17K miles -- will add more detail -- and questions -- in further posts.

But to start with something minor, the neutral lamp does not come on. How do you remove the lamp holder? I don't want to twist something off and regret it. Or are there other places to start looking.

I have printed off the parts and service manuals, and bought the DesmoTimes maintenance manual, am perusing all. I bought a 907 new in '92 (Riverside) and loved it, but traded it away a few years later for a Triumph Daytona 1200, which I also sold. Now I have replaced the 907. I live near Boston, have owned many bikes over many years, currently have two Ducatis, the 907 and a 2007 S4R (Seacoast), and two vintage Triumph 650s, one original 1969 TR6R, and one Bitsa in the works. Could be that decades of working on British twins have set the stage for maintaining my 907 -- will report back.

welcome back to the fraternity...

as with many Ducati components - the necessity to remove other bits for finger clearance is determined by the availability of persons with smaller hands that you can force to do the work. Sometimes they can be reluctant - particularly if the surfaces are still hot; I dunno why...

to replace the neutral lamp you will need to remove the whole speedo and instrument cluster.

this involves dropping the speedo cable and the tacho cable.
(amazing they couldn't do these as electronic, huh?)

this instrument naicel is attached to the headlight frame with 4 rubber cushioned head screws.
don't be tempted to try to undo 2 screws and twist...the rubber separates from the screw head easily and you'll be left trying to repair them; can be done with Loctite - but you don't wanna have to...

from recollection there are 2 electrical plugs; these seem to be easy enough to get apart.

I suggest to replace ALL the lamps and test before you re-assemble.
the "wiring" is by a circuit board (made from plastic paper) and very easily damaged.
my guess is the contacts should be protectedd with dialectric grease; it is exposed to the elements while riding and will get covered in crap if you ride in the wet...

the fairing seems to work like a vacuum cleaner and picks up all the dust; my relays and regulator are always filthy

estimated time for bulb replacement = 2 hours

Hey thanks -- just the detail I was hoping for! With the front fairing off, I can see the circuit board and touch the lamp holders, but didn't try to get any closer. Now I know. Everything looks pretty clean in that area, the bike came from a dry climate. The whole bike is quite clean, well, except from some mess around the breather, and glop from overzealous chain lubing, and ... but I'm getting ahead of myself, will save details for later.

You have checked the nuetral switch for proper operation?? It's on the back of the engine behind the right foot peg. They go bad and or the wire gets knocked off.

Thanks, Jon. You mean that switch that points straight back, but with no wire attached? And maybe the yellow/green wire w female connector that ain't connected to nuthin'?

Consulting the wiring diagram I printed off from your link, I see that that's the wire that goes to the neutral switch. Will attach said wire to aforementioned switch, connect battery, and see what happens. Please stand by for further transmissions ...

This forum is great! I no longer have to use my brain!

Good news -- I re-installed the battery, and the neutral light lights up now that I connected the neutral light wire to the neutral light switch!

Thanks everybody :)

Welcome on board Kurt.

This little thread is a good synopsis of the board and the site in general. There is not much PASO stuff which hasn't been discussed over the years...
