Hi all,
I have just fitted new tyres to my 906 and I was after some advice on how much gap is enough ie:between tyre and cross piece in the swingarm and tyre and chain. The reason I'm asking is I don't want to fork out for a new chain if I don't have to.The rear cam adjuster is in the 6 o'clock position at present and there is a gap of approximately 4mm between the tyre and cross piece. With the chain,it is only just touching the tyre so I could turn the rear sprocket around to get about 3mm clearance.
These are the tyres I had fitted,

Cheers Ken

I tried turning the sprocket around to gain more clearance but this has been known to put unwanted stress on the bolts causing them to break. A better option is to get a spacer made up.

Seems, that there is enough space between tire and swingarm...

btw, how and with what chemicals You polished those aluminium parts? It looks great!

G'day Antti,

Thanks.Polishing those parts was a long, painful exercise which consisted of sanding all the anodising off the aluminium using 180,380,600 grit wet n dry. Then I used a high speed wax buff to bring it up to a mirror shine.During the whole process I lost several layers of skin off my fingers.
To keep it shiny I use a product called Purple Polish,so far the best polish that I've used.

You need to be mindful of the chain running in a straight and true alignment with the 2 sprockets. Running them offset will give you problems.

The tire at the front cross section just doesn't have enough clearance. At speed the tire will grow in diameter and likely rub.

See this site for a mod that has been done:

Great polishing work.
The result is really impressive.

The minimum clearance from the chain to the tire is 0. An occasional light rub between the two is not a problem. Chewing away rubber is a problem, but leaving marks on the edge of your tire is not. It is more important that your rear tire be pointed square in your swingarm.

Cheers,

Duc906: did U anything same time to front sprocket offset, as You "turned" rear sporcket??? I hope, that U changed also front sprocket offset same time.... If no, then Your chain line is very bad and it can make bad damages to chain and engine cases, if chain gets broken... :smoke:

Slight thread-jack.

Another way to remove anodize from aluminum parts is to use high strength oven cleaner, and heat them up a bit. You may have some explaining to do to your wife why you are using gloves and baking you motorcycle parts in the oven, but it might be easier than trying to sand it all off.

Cheers,

200° celsius is enough, but the kitchen's oven might be seriously polluted by such a job...
