So the 906 is running beautifully now - all fully legal with the new big rubber on it. The clutch was very grabby though, and extremely noisy, so on the weekend we ripped the plates out and blew all the dust out of there, and off all the plates - and then refitted them as they'd come out.

The clutch is now *much* better; far less noisy, and a lot smoother.

But I have since developed a new issue: changing down from 3rd, I often miss 2nd gear entirely, and end up in neutral, with the dash-light showing. Either that or it finds a false-neutral between 3rd and 2nd. I am NOT making two downshift movements.

There are no issues up-shifting at all - except the occasional false neutral I find with my gimpy left ankle. (I wrecked it, and have to move my whole leg to change up). Downshifting has been reliable up until we fixed the clutch.

I make downshifts fairly emphatically; with a strong downwards push on the gear lever. I thought I might have been too light with it, but I am sure this is not the case after finding the same "bug" at least 30 times in the last two days.

Any idea what could be causing this? I find it very unsettling not getting the gear I want!

Maybe You have to open left side of engine to see is that sifting lever adjusted right to mid position....

I also have a gimpy left foot and find GP shifting works much better for me,an easy change on the Paso. As Antti notes checking the shift mechanism for centering is a very likely cause of the false neutrals

... and if open left side, then surely same time open starter engine and change brushes (if they neeed change) !!!!!

That gear lever inside is quite critical to be just in middle for right down and up sifting There is also one srpring what can be also broken, as heppened sometimes to Ducati engines. Lever adjusting screw/nut must be in right torque that it dont loose :smoke:

This is what you will see when you take the cover off. The 2 connected arrows point to the springs.

Thanks for this people! I take it that "GP Shifting" (A term I have never heard before) turns the bike into a 1-up and 5 down gearbox? That, I think would *really* mess me up; I rode bikes for so many years with a conventional box. Old dog, New tricks etc.

I would try it except that it would mean more difficulty changing down than up, and I find it more important to have proper downshifts than upshifts; if I miss a gear when accelerating, there's not really an issue - but if I miss one going down, that feels very uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.

The description of what I need to check sounds like Greek to me, as I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. Peter Bee - I may call on you to help me try to sort this out!

Oddly, on the way to work this morning, the gearbox behaved perfectly. I'll see what happens over the next few days.
