Hello all
I'm new on here, new to Ducatis, though not to motorcycles.
I've just viewed an H reg, 907I.E. desmo (I think I've got that right) in red.
It's been standing in the owner's garage for six years (He's been ill).

Known faults =

One of the fork seals is leaking.(It's leaked all over the front wheel rim)
Slight pitting of the chrome fork legs.
No fluid pressure at the front brake lever.
Grazed front brake lever and bar end.
As I was there working, and had not expected to be looking at a bike, I forgot to note/ask the mileage; It was the bloke's first bike, so I doubt that it is very high.
As it's sat for so long, there was no chance of starting it. Presumably, it would be wise to flush out the tank, and put fresh fuel in before attempting to start it. Would jump starting it be likely to fry the rectifier/regulator?

I'm thinking of buying it as a second, hobby bike. I usually work on my own machines, but bought a new Moto Guzzi last year, and I'm bored with not even having any servicing to do.
The biggest job I've completed on a motorcycle previously, was an engine change, and rebuild, on a Triumph Trophy 1200. I'm an electro-mechanical service engineer, so competent enough to carry out most tasks on a motorcycle.
The thing is: I really don't know what the true value of his motorcycle is.
Apart from the above, it's going to need new tyres, and I couldn't get to the back end to check the chain etc. The bodywork looks to be O.K. on the outside, but who knows what it's like underneath?
I'm willing to pay what it is worth; He seems a genuine bloke, but I don't want to pay too much and then find it needs a fortune spending on it. Dealers seem to be asking just shy of £2,000 for them, which seems way too much to me.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in anticipation.

If it stood for so long also consider the costs of a full service incl. new belts, valve clearance check etc. which it will need plus eventually new sprocket/chain set, fork slider tubes (if you can find some. Depending on the pitting polishing or rechroming won`t help)

Along with the above posts;
Other costs I found not always mentioned;
Both my bikes had completely shot fork lower bushes, 38,000km and 90,000km, and the rear shocks weren't great , one stuffed- adjuster missing, tyres will need replacing, worn cush rubbers on both bikes, they are expensive, head set bearings, coolant and oil leaks, and the full electrical rewire etc

It sounds like it would cost a few thousand pounds to fix it up depending on what level you wish to acheive. Whats a great bike worth less repairs = value, well at least a starting value anyway.

Worth every rouble IMHO!

If you don't want it where is it?

In the UK anything from £500 to £3000 has been paid recently but from my own experience you will be looking at a full service all fluids included, tank and carb' clean, Fork seals, chains possibly sprockets, those tires will need replacing no doubt the electrics will need checking with all the fixtures and the clutch may need a little persuasion if it hasn't been turned over for a while - plus the new battery.

Also check the chrome work inside the headlight and any brittle plastic around the rear light unit.

I have gone for a full strip and two years later I am still finding little niggles to sort before I can rebuild plus the cash  But then I am also scratching around for low cost parts as well.

But that doesn't put me off looking for another!

So as I said at the top if you don't want it where is it?

Also please don't let it end up getting parted :(

generelly if you rebuild a bike and know it will take years, replace the belts as last. Otherwise they will be due before you`ve driven one single mile. (basically the same for tires)

Thank you all for the above  .

I'll pitch the owner my offer and see if he bites.
If I buy it, I'll be posting photos on here etc
If I don't end up with the bike (and I do want it ), I'll tell the owner that their is some interest on this forum.
Regards.

P.Man.

For what its worth, I bought two pasos over the past couple of years, a 907ie non runner and a 750 with mot. Cost of 907 (18k km) was £636 (had not run for 6 years), and the 750 with new tyres and 12 months MOT last october cost £550.

The jobs on the 907 to make it roadworthy were.

Belts (£65?)
2 oil changes (£60)
oil filter (£10)
Fuel pump and filters (£150)
Aprillia 1000 thermostat (£15 ebay)
Radiator fan (£65 got last one from ducati)
Clutch slave cylinder (£50)
Chain and sprockets (£130)
Tyres (£200)
Shims & half moon washers (£80 ish)
Plugs
Coolant
Brake fluid
Allen bolts (rocker covers)
Gasket material (rocker covers)
Paint (rocker covers)
Electrical connector cleaning fluid
Injector cleaner
Brake cleaner
Grease etc.

750 paso so far has included
Belts
Plugs
oil
Oil filter
fuel filter
Brake fluid
Generator cover gasket

Still to do the valves (over the winter)

Took about 6 months on and off to get 907 running and MOT'd

Technically should change fork oil and grease suspension linkage

Thanks riascns - it's useful to have your costs listed like that.
It has also reassured me that my offer for the bike isn't too high.
They're on holiday, so I won't get a response until next week.
So, fingers crossed, and I hope to be announcing a new arrival soon :)

Well, the deed is done. It's sitting in my garage right now, hidden behind an 'invisibility cloak' ( I haven't told her yet  ).
I'll post more information and a photo or two, in a new thread, when I get some time.
It has no battery - any suggestions? I'm in the UK.

Cheers

I think the battery is similar to an old (1983) Honda CB900F Battery which you can still get from Honda dealers. Alternatively, buy a smaller dry battery and use the extra space for storage (thats what I did), plus a maintenance free battery will put up with far more abuse (recharge cycles).

I got an original battery from my local Ducati dealer price = £32.50

Good Idea!

How many paso owners in the UK?

What percentage of Paso owners with a working paso at any given time?

I think we should organise a meet up in the UK as soon as possible. I am currently based in South Wales with a 907 fully up and running and my brother in law lives on the Wirral with another one fully up and in daily use.

So we need to start planning something. Hopefully with an overnight stop so we can have a drink or three!

Every year passes and we end up saying we should do something and don't!
