Like to start out saying this is my first street bike, only been rippin dirt bikes most my life. Mechanically inclined, but clueless when it comes to bikes. Just picked up an '87 750 Paso. Knew It had a few kinks to it, but ran well overall, stripped the fairings off today to see what I really bought. Spedo isnt working, and the cable spins fine and the actual spedo goes up when twisting the spindle on the rear of it, although it does not return to 0 unless you spin it back the other way.

On top of that, this black cylinder(pictured below) with one fitting for 1/4" hose and two on the other end.

one of the fitting on the side with two runs from the cylinder on the left side of the bike to the right side and almost down to engine where there is a fitting missing a hose....

Im assuming that gets connected to there as some sort of vaccumn line, but the other fitting on the side with the two fitting is just there, no hose no nothing and I cant figure out where it goes.

On top of that im looking at this shorted wire running(or was ) from the battery towards the tail of the bike into the black box, maybe the starter solenoid? No clue but heres pics, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum, Congratualations on your purchase I am sure many of us will have fun answering your quetions and it's nice to see such clear photo's. I think though you may need to submit them in the future in a smaller format?

You have come to the best place for info - Would be handy to know where in the world you live? Stick it on your profile page.

Also any chance of a couple of full bike photo's?

Regarding the cable does the needle drop back to zero if you pull the cable out?

If you go into the 750 FAQ you will find a clear wireing diagram(s) that will help identify your wires and their respective colours. That bare wire looks like a negative earth so it may be an adjoining live wire that's overheated and grounded on this, sadly it may be just down to old Italian wireing. I am pretty sure there is a similiar photo elsewhere on the site that will help identify your cables within there.

The black tube if I am correct is to do with emission regs which is why it may of been bypased hence the loose ends which also suggests you may be reading this across the pond to me?

I'm located in Colorado, here's a few pics OF the bike, minus fairings and tank... And dont worry thats not a puddle of oil under it, just the run off from starting to clean and degrease everything nasty.

Thanks for the quick reply and the welcome to the forum. Stoked to find the site. Looked into all the links and think I have everything figured out, just have to locate a regulator since the ground burnt through the base of a few other wires at the entrance to the reg.

Welcome.
the front fender is from a 916. the p.o. took off the fork brace which is very helpful on this bike.
The battery post needs a bolt in it, and to be cleaned.
the melted wire - I'm not sure what that goes to, but check the connectors on the end of it and they will probably show you why it melted.
the black cannister is the Charcoal cannister for collecting vent gasses from the gas tank, and pulling them into the intake. Make sure the vent hose from the tank is clear of anything that would light on fire, like the exhaust. Also, the other end is tied into the intake manifolds. If those hoses are left open, you will have a big air leak, and the bike will run lean. Those same hoses should be tied to the CDI box, as a vacuum advance for the ignition. Its the same diameter as windshield wiper fluid hosing, and is rather cheap. Replace it all. The stock stuff is prone to cracking and air leaks.

Other than that, clean, polish, and trace all those wires. I highly recommend taking every connector apart, clean if necessary, and add some silicone grease (dielectric) to every one to give them a new lease on life.

Oh, and of course the standard change the fluids, including the forks.
Otherwise, the bike is amazingly stock.

cheers,

Welcome to the group!!

First things first. Find and clean every ground that attaches to the engine or the frame. These bikes have barely decent electrics and the poor grounds are at the heart of the problem. get you sandpaper and scotch brite out and clean clean clean. There is one under the front of the tank and on the engine behind the right foot peg area. This is only step 1 of a good electric system. Read thru the FAQ and you will find many many answers.

I treid to resize the pics but no go. 800x600 works best for this forum.

That canister isn't stock. I can't ever recall seeing on an any of my Paso's.

The fitting that you are referring to in your post is actually the bleed fitting for the hydraulic clutch - don't attach the loose hose there!

Welcome , I think you heading sez it all :P .I think that black cylinder is an evaporative emission control thingy,Basically captures any fuel vapour escaping from carb float bowls and tank vent, which brings me to my burning question ........what are those carbs on your paso ?
