So my chain snapped the other day. I was very lucky, it happened pulling away from the lights when the clutch grabbed. If it had gone under full power in a sweeper, I'd be at least mangled by the flailing chain, and at worst dead. The bike would be mostly destroyed as I understand this usually result in a broken crank case and ruined bodywork at the very least.

The bike was fitted with a brand new Regina chain when I purchased it. However according to the markings, it is rated at less than half the torque the 906 will make. The technician basically said that whoever specified it was trying to kill me, and the person who installed it should be done for negligence.

So, moral of the story is, check your chain when you purchase to make sure it is rated for the bike's power!

I have now fitted a $390 D.I.D. Golden thing, which I am reliably informed will last a very long time indeed.

It's better to be born lucky than rich I guess, but I am feeling down on my luck as the third water pump in less than 5000 klicks has just failed on my Porsche 928S, and each time it costs $2000 to replace. *sigh*

I bought a new chain for my ss from my local shop , some x ring thing , any how when I got it home I found there was only a clip type joining link where as I like rivoted links . Back to the shop some days later lookin for the rivot link and nother guy , upon finding that I had not fitted it to a 125 mx bike that it was designed for , did me a good deal on the right chain.
I have had 2 fn expensive regina chains fail on me at rediculisly short distances ( less than 2k ) and have not bought another since ( 20 odd years ) and have had no chain problems

You was VERY lucky!
I have installed some stainless steel case protectors on my 907s.
For sure, they (perhaps) manage to save the case, not yourself...
Ciao

Desmo times sells a case protector.

re 928 water pumps, that is most strange! Sorry to hear that, most frustrating.
Were they Lasso pumps or a cheaper ebay chinese copy? There are some where the plastic impeller spins or worse comes off.
928MS.com I thnk makes a kit to refurb the area if it gets scored. You machine out and then screw in a cup, looks a bit complicated but better than a new block.
$2000 sounds very expensive! Normally you would get the timing belts tenshioner etc done here for about $1500
try http://www.928srus.com. Roger Tyson , has excellent service. I am slowly finishing a 6 month fix up on my S4, lots of bits from Roger, trying the new Volvo engine mounts.....

Lucky you, I am working up to making a repair to a fellow Paso owners case after a chain snapped. You would not believe the damage! We are giving it a go because it is a write off otherwise and for that I said I would do my best.... but only the once. Biggest job is matching a replacement filler plate for the broken off casing but the good news is that the gearbox volume has not been penetrated - its that bad. If I successfully repair it then I will post the pictures but otherwise no because they will only depress you.
