Ok so it seems my starter solenoid has decided to give up on me
wouldnt start this afternoon
so i pulled the right side covers and i get 13.7V at the two wire connector when pressing the start button but no click or power to the starter
then if i remove the two 12V wires from the solenoid and jump them together then the starter turns over just fine.
So is this solenoid available? Is there a crossover in regular parts land?
Says jideco and japan on the plastic part of it but no number?
And a round label (unreadable) on the bottom of the metal can

thanks
doug

Hi Doug

The starter solenoid is the same on all 2 valve engines, at least up to 1998. So there should be no problem to get one from your Duc. dealer.
Ducati partnr. is 39740011A. Orginal fitment is Hitachi 12 V MS 5A-181.

Hella 4RA 003 510-131 solenoid may also fit.

Regards

Any starter solenoid should work as long as it fits. It's just a BIG relay.

also,Hitachi solenoids are available at almost any auto or motorcycle supply and as Jon stated any relay of the proper rating and physical size will work, and it does not need to be under the seat

the 907 relay[solenoid] is actually on the right side, just in front of the coil mounting, i thought about changing it to something similar, even went to the local auto shop, but thier book of stuff didnt show anything i wanted to cobb in there.
however, as otto stated i should be able to find the thing since it was on the 900's till 1998 or so, and last nite i took off the two 10mm nuts that were holding the posts tight against the plastic housing, and the posts were then allowed to "push in/down" against what i guess is the contact disk of the coil that activates when the start button is pressed, there was spring like resistance and after several "pushes" i then replaced the 10mm nuts that hold the posts in place.
then i went to the garage and pluged in the two wire plug for "activation" and upon turning on the key, and pressing the "start" button, i get a solid click every time now, even let it sit all nite and tried it again before i left for work and still get the loud click, so it should work for a bit, at least till i find a replacement.....

solenoids are about the most basic of electrical devices around,as simple as it gets.
the early style Hitachi made by Jideco now Mitsubi is still available all over the globe
you can get them new at the dealer for about 30usd or order it special from Gowanloch for 60usd and shipping

or look on ebay, china will send you a very good replacement for about 5 usd total, slightly bigger with a little bit different connection

If you just have to have one as OEM ,I will trade the extra one I have for the right deal
shoot me your offer

keep it clean and connections tight, cover on properly grease helps to keep the water out
water heat and corrosion are the enemy

Its wierd really, cause the bike lives in a garage, and the connections were all perfect, with no corrosion evident at all, and has sat unridden for almost three years prior to last month......
but i noticed that every once in a while i would get the no start from the starter button, and i would simply turn the off/run switch off/on and it would go, never thought that the solenoid was giving up, till sunday when nothing made it go till i messed with the springloaded pieces inside and now its working again.
I guess it had gotten stuck? and wasnt activating? anyways, its going strong and i got another one coming so all is well in 907 land :-)

doug(can u tell im bored at work today?)

contacts are always an issue on these older bikes. Also the wiring mods which can be found in the FAQ are quite helpful in reducing the stress . Cleaning the wiring connectors and switch components also helps to make sure the solenoid gets all the power it needs to function properly. Details on how to deal with all of these issues is here and can be found in the downloads sections or the FAQ or by using the search function. Sounds like you have some more preventive work to do. Takes some time and a little elbow grease but is well worth the effort and will vastly increase the reliability of these bikes.

Don't forget to clean all the grounds as well :choo:

Well, all the connections had been checked prior to the restart last month, and when this happened i initailly thought neutral and/or sidestand switch but checked both and they were working as supposed to as well.

I then went to the solenoid and even the little connector was clean and corrosion free and upon testing with the meter i had good V+ [13.7] to the solenoids activating circuit so i can only assume that the internal solenoid connection [electrical OR mechanical] was at fault.

And since messing with the springloaded part[mechanical] of the solenoid seems to have it working again[since its "crimped" together i didnt want to force it apart until i had a working replacement] i keep it dry and had no battery on it and had checked all connection as i replaced the small rubber standoffs to the dash pod and had the headlight off during this little repair plus i had the computer off the bike installing a chip that one of the paso members kindly made for me, during this time i checked and cleaned all the connections under the tank as well...

Fun times, i posted a pic on facebook of it with everything off/loose and a buddy was like "it will never run again" but it does indeed "run" and very well....
