Hello all,

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement regulator/rectifier for my '88 750 Paso? All advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Erskine

Erskine,

as one of the forum dinosaurs you should know :)
There`s ie:
http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/
http://www.electrosport.com/
http://www.bevelheaven.com/
http://www.desmotimes.com/
http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/
etc.

Just don`t buy an original one.

G.

Thanks, G

A couple of questions:

When you say 'Don't buy an original one', do you mean don't buy one like this, which is New Old Stock? https://store.bevelheaven.com/electrics ... antah-etc/ Are they just not good enough these days?

And would an alternative unit like this http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/RR23.html#aRR23 be wired to operate the charge light on the dash?

Erskine, remember to check stator wirings with insulation meter (like Megger) that it is ok !!! Wires have to have very big amount of ohms to the ground. Sometimes fail in rectifier fails also stator and via versa. It was only "advice" no matter i dont know whatkind problems You have (as You didnt told)

Hello Antti!

Thanks very much for your advice, but I'm afraid I can understand almost nothing of it. The problem is not your English, which is wonderful as usual, but that I know almost nothing about electricity, and I have only a simple multimeter, which I use to check my battery voltage. I don't know how to do anything else with it.

I think the stator is part of the alternator, isn't it?

All I know is, the bike shop told me that when they used their test regulator/rectifier in my bike, the battery charged up fine. So it seems I need a new regulator/rectifier.

After some more research, it seems to me that the modern aftermarket units are better than the Ducati one, so I'll probably try to get an Electrosport unit from the States.

By the way, I must apologise to you for the stupid remarks made recently about Finnland by the New Zealand Government minister Gerry Brownlee. We have the Right in power in New Zealand at the moment, and they are saying and doing some very stupid things, which will do our country no good. I have crossed swords with Gerry Brownlee myself recently, and the man is nothing but a fat arrogant oaf.

Also, I recently learned about the Finnish hero soldier Simo Hayha, who killed so many Russians as a sniper. What a man! You must be very proud of him.

Hey Skins

What Antti is saying is that the stators on these bikes are often the reason for the regulators failing.
Stators on these bikes come wired up one of two ways
First is as a single phase...one wire makes the complete winding, the better way
Second and more common is 2 phase...two wires, each wire completes 50 % of the total winding

Both types have a tendency to short out due to heat caused by the bikes corroded electrical harness.

You may find after you acquire a decent after market regulator your Paso still won't charge

You will also have to determine which style stator you have and yes the stator is part of the "alternator"

If in fact you find your stator to be the issue do yourself a favor and have it rewound as a single phase style..Here in the USA it cost about 150 to have the stator rewound much cheaper then the replacement options around and you get a better product which will last the life of the bike if wired up properly.

Thanks Higgy

How about the fact that the system charged ok when the bike shop's test regulator/rectifier was used? What do I make of that?

How about this one: http://www.electrosport.com/street-bike ... ifier.html

However it looks like it may be only for single phase bikes.

How to I tell if my alternator is single phase or two phase?

either on that page will work. I did the ESR515 on my 906. The 906 was 2 phase but I am having it rewired as single to handle my dual headlight. My 907 is single phase

the single phase has only two wires from the stator.
The two phase has 3

either of those regulators will wire up either system, the only difference is the way they get wired. Electrosport also makes a terminal kit which matches the stock Paso connector to the regulator. Neither regulator includes the kit and the wire ends may not match what you have now. The ESR515 wasn't even close to mine so the terminal kit made it much cleaner to install.

ST2 also came single phase in 98. After that Ducati whet 3 phase which takes a different type of diode setup. A triac as opposed to a diac. A triac is 6 diodes, A diac is 4

been off for a couple of days but higgy already answered it all.
The original reg/rect. has a simple electrical circuit which is infamous to fail. A very typical problem on old Ducatis. About any aftermarket unit is better than that and they also only cost a fraction of it.
When my first unit failed I got a brandnew original one and I still measured over 16V at higher speeds.
I brought it back and got another one. Shortly after I got an aftermarket and it was all fine ever since.
I think I still have that second original unit. You could have that if you don`t go to an Electrex or Electrosport unit immedeately.
Be sure the housing of your reg/rect. has a ground connection. Some aftermarket unit may not need that but the original does and if you`re not sure just add one.

G.

why does the wiring diagram that comes with the 92 907 show the brown wire from the ignition relay going to the eight pin connector and to the regulator but the newer regulator does not have a place for the brown wire to land? :banghead:
