Well done, mate.

I'm down here in New Zealand. I have a pretty good idea where the Carolinas are, but please tell us, where is Mt Mitchell?

Mount Mitchell is in North Carolina off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is the highest point in America east of the Mississippi. About 30 miles north of Asheville.

Tried to upload pics but jpg size too big.

Put about 350 miles on the bike this weekend following a valve adjustment with bodywork put back on Saturday morning....

Yes. Is there a capped off line on the bottom of your tank?

Cheers, Phil

There is no spot on the carburetor for a return, installed fpr and toyed with idling.. still does the same thing just not as bad.. idle will be smooth and low, snap the throttle a few times or rev it up and the idle sits high for 10 seconds sometimes up to 45 seconds then comes back down.. suggestions?

Ah, yeah that piece was not there when I got it... So is the idle thing normal? If not how do I remedy it?

A high idle that settles down is sometimes the indication of a vacuum leak, or intake leak. Check the boots to the carbs and intake manifolds. I believe the manifolds have 0-rings in them. (Idon't have stock, so can't say. I have Dellortos with Malossi intakes) If they get tired, or if the previous owner put in silicone in place, you will get an air leak. I chased one for years before finally pulling off the manifolds to find the previous owner had used silicone, which degrades with modern US gasoline. New o-rings made all the difference.

Easy test is to spray suspected areas with flammable solvent, such as carb cleaner, WD-40 or starting fluid, while the engine is running. If there is a vacuum leak, the idle will change as it sucks in the volatile compound.

As for your fuel return line, see if there is a nipple on the bottom of your tank that is blocked off, or unused. Seems a previous owner didn't understand the need. It reduces the fuel pressure coming to the carb, while ensuring a good constant flow. Float needles aren't so easily overcome. Without the T in the line, your float needle needs to hold back the full brunt of your fuel pump. Aftermarket fuel pump may have more pressure than the stock one. Don't need much pressure, just need flow.

Cheers, Phil

Phil was quicker.
Two more things to check is if the float needle and seat properly seal and if the floater itself is still airtight.

I`ve found disolved rubber bits in a jet of a friends Keihin carb once which caused similar problems. The carb had been cleaned by a dealer before. Guess he didn`t look close enough.
