I think I know why the instrument cluster was zip-tied to the bike......those vibration dampeners retail for $16 EACH!!! :thumbdown: I was figuring $5-$7 each. The huge one for my Harley can be had for about $2.50. My local dealer just had three in stock and gave me a "deal" on them for $12 each since they will probably never have to restock them.

Disappointing news is that the one exhaust ring that I need is not available anymore. This is the part that holds the pipe to the head. I'm gonna look around, but may get a buddy of mine to cut me one out of 1/4" plate steel with his plasma cutter. The inside groove may be easy to cut by making a holder and turning it on a lathe. I'll email a couple of places first, to see if they have one, because I can't picture anyone having a spare just floating around. :sad:

Looks like we got most of the electrical issues taken care of, at least, according to the multimeter. I did run across one thing that I would like someone's opinion on.

The two pairs of wires coming from the ignition pickups are wrapped in a cloth-type material. This material is in very poor condition and falling apart. I removed a bunch of it and am debating if I should replace it with some type of insulating conduit. The reasoning behind this is that I know that, sometimes, when you have a wire with current going through it sitting parallel to an inert wire, a current can be induced into the inert one by the one with the initial current. Could this be an issue?

Now, I'm waiting for some parts to come in this week, and I'll have the exhaust reinstalled, then, it'll be time to pull the carbs and intake runners off the heads.

Looks like the project just took on a new dimension. Is the valve frozen in the guide? This may explain why the intake system was slap dashed back together? Hope this is all you find on tear down.

Could be the grinding is just factory casting cleanup, on the other hand, if home grown attempt at porting, could be good, could be bad. Place to check is valve seat to head[in port] interface. If sharp edges, more than likely factory cleanup. Attempt at smoothing and blending would be more than likely done later. Although, don't remember back in the day if Ducati blended seat port area.[only tore down a few]

Cool.....Everything looks normal, compared to the other head. I'm just glad that this thing wasn't any more "Mickey Moused" than what I've seen, already. Here's the horizontal head's intake port...



I've cleaned the carbs and checked the jetting, and all looks well, there, too. I just need to buy a couple of rebuild/gasket kits. Looks like I'll be surfing a little bit today for the best prices and availablity.


Edit - The carbs are Dellorto PHF 36's and one is marked "MD" and one is marked "MS". The only difference that I can see is where the idle adjustment screw is located. Is there a reason for these to be different?
