One way is to look at the ignition system. If it has one pickup sensor on the outside of the flywheel, in about the 1 o'clock postion, then it is a California model. Others had two pickups that can be adjusted, just like later SS and Monsters. Of course this was a bizare time in Ducati history, so evrything is suspect.
